LANTA Lehigh Valley Metro Holiday service notice: LANTA Metro and Metro Plus service will NOT be operated on Thursday, Nov 26. Regular service will resume Friday. Transit services are NOT operated on: New Years Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Some service is curtailed on New Year's and Christmas Eve.

is taking a good hard look at solar power for its passenger shelters. Its being done in Miami and several southern states along with California. Locally, Metro passenger shelters have lighted advertising panels that not only project the ads, but provide some lighting around the shelter for security purposes. Current...ly these lights are hard-wired using traditional links to electric power. The question becomes not whether or not to use solar but would solar be effective in a northern climate? Can energy be safely stored in sufficient supply to power the shelter lights overnight in instances where the sun is not directly shining perhaps for days.
Solar would be cheaper to operate for sure and the higher cost of purchasing panels and installation and batteries would be offset by installation of hard wire connections and cost savings over time. Solar is also very useful to use where electric power is not readily available at the bus stop.
More on this as we learn more, but it is a very interesting alternative to pursue.Mehr lesen

Association (APTA) has developed a wealth of information to encourage greater use of public transportation. One of the 'tools' at
thier website is a calculator to determine how much of a
contribution to reducing one's 'carbon footprint' riding transit would
make. It's fun, try it!

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is studying the entire concept of Human Service Transportation delivery. Currently these services - Senior Shared Ride; Medical Assistance, County and social service agency type transportation to meet special needs - are provided through County agencies like LANTA and Met...ro Plus. The State is considering the possibility of grouping these services and providing them on a regional basis. This has pros and cons but is certainly something worth evaluating.

LANTA Lehigh Valley Metro Boo. One of LANTA's drivers on the Emmaus-Northampton, D Route, got into the spirit of things yesterday, Friday, Oct 30, and dressed as a Scarecrow for Halloween! She gave out 'treats' to her passengers. How can you not love riding the bus with drivers like that?

Land use. One of the major findings of the Moving LANTA Forward planning process is that in the diverse and complex community called the Lehigh Valley, that use of land as designed by the 62 area municipalities has not exactly been 'transit friendly.' Nothing works against an efficient and productive transit system m...ore that urban sprawl and looking at an arial view of the Valley, we've sprawled big time! Over the years, many saw this as a solid economic development approach as community leaders strove to attract new businesses and residents to the area. But this has played havoc with transit planning and development.
So, the question is: Can the Geni be put back into the bottle?
The planners optimistically say Yes and have developed a power point presentation to be used by the LANTA staff to educate municipal leaders as to the benefits of transit oriented design.
One thing is certain: if transit is NOT included in the planning process, we are effectively planning transit OUT of the local transportation system. These are not decisions that LANTA or the Counties it serves makes but are made by the 62 area municipalities.

The myth: The federal government heavily subsidizes mass
transit, while driving pays for itself through the gas tax.
The reality: For the gas tax to pay for highways (not even
local roads), it would have to be on the order of a dollar per gallon. The federal gas tax
is just 18.4 cents a gallon. That's a federal subsidy of about 80 cents per
gallon of gas used on the highway.

Was thinking the other day, there are a LOT of movies where buses played a major role: Bus Stop (with Marilyn Monroe!); The Gauntlet (Clint Eastwood action packed!); It Happened One Night (Clark Gable and Claudet Colbert - the best of the poor little rich girl runs away genre) and Speed (who can forget that one!?).
Anyone think of any others?

Kick-off meetings held over the past two days on a major technology project that will link together all the existing electronic information tools into a more manageable central database. In addition to the efficiencies gained in the process, the step up for passengers will be access to 'real time' information about th...e transit system. Yes, that means passengers will be able to learn exactly what time the bus is expected at the bus stop. This will be accomplished through GPS mapping and signalization and will be delivered in an electronic format - over the internet and to cellular phones - so that the info will be accessible whereever you are in the Valley!
This is like a giant leap for customers!
