how could anyone think he was not harrassed all the time. and how many people are our soldiers killing every day in Afghanistan, and how many women and children have been bombed by our country there, we ruined their lives, their homes, their families. These people are just as real and we should cry and wail for their lost lives and hopes and dreams that our country took away from them. people are people no matter where they live.

This is more than just our sense of justice. The same is represented in out economy. The greedy self interests were allowed to rule and two significant things happened recently that show America no longer is a "shining beacon":
China leads: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XTAUtMjuy0
and our ally Japan follows: http://www.rgemonitor.com/us-monitor/257796/the_rising_sun_also_sets cited, our lack of judicial justice.

Economy? America has a lot to be grateful for... and Americans should start to thank all the people (in the 'third world' who sometimes unwittingly and mostly by violent means) contributed to Americans outstanding llifestyle.

Correct analysis, but when dealing with ideologues, numbers do not matter. The first part of this article was very good, the latter extremely depressing. I wonder if the quagmire in Afghanistan can be solved at all, but worry about the alternative of letting the Taliban reclaim Afghanistan or get their hands on Pakistan's nukes with the help of the ISI? Pretty frightening.

exactly Kathleen, you make a good point. as we do with public education, *investing* in the nation's health, by providing access to world-class healthcare for *every* citizen, regardless of income or status, can only have one possible outcome... the people - the entire nation - gets smarter, healthier and STRONGER. just the benefits to society, ... Read Moresocial AND economic (along with ridding the healthcare system of the corporate greed & corruption that exists now) are reason enough to kick these robber barons of corporate healthcare to the curb!

as Brian rightly points out, private insurance companies (cartels) are not actually in the 'business' of providing health 'care'... they exist ONLY to 'skim money' from a health system that is not 'healthy' at all and to deny, wherever possible, coverage to those, of their clients/patients, who become a 'liability'. in other words, client X is no longer an 'asset' to the insurance company's bottom line, so some 'pre-existing condition' clause must be used against (now) 'patient' X, so that the insurance CEO can 'earn' an even fatter end of quarter BONUS... for increasing profits, by cutting costs, ie, denying coverage to the desperately ill and dieing.

personally, i am of the mind that the medical needs of a human being ought to come before profit, always, which is why private-for-profit 'health insurance' is not just an oxymoron, but such a scheme (scam) will never be compatible with Health, Care OR even Humans, for that matter. private health insurance companies are no better than parasites. even a cockroach has more dignity than a health insurance exec.
