Brian Hartman Just installed the Kindle for PC software. Are there any plans for the software to support unencrypted mobi files? I'm reading a mobi book on my Kindle right now, and it doesn't show up in the software.

Kindle Books: The Best of 2009

We know: ranking books is crazy. How, for example, do you compare a 32-page picture book warning you, charmingly, of the world's most dangerously cute creatures with a 1,344-page intensely personal history of the California-Mexico border? Well, in our top 100 editors' picks we've done jus...t that, and more. The bottom line? Whatever the order, these are the books we've loved the best this year.

Misty Bacon Obermeier Does anyone know, if you buy ebooks on ebay that are in a PDF format, can they be uploaded to your Kindle?

The Kindle 2 and Kindle DX both support native conversion of PDF files, as long as they don't have copy-protection. If you've got the Kindle 1, you can use Calibre to convert the file to a Kindle-friendly format (again, assuming there's no copy protection).

As far as I'm aware, there are no legal ways to convert a copy-protected PDF file to Kindle format.

Aaron Anderson

Aaron Anderson How do the books and magazines work? Do you pay a monthly fee or something? To get classic books like Steinbeck or Dostoyevsky would you have to pay?

Hi, Aaron.

You pay a monthly fee for magazine subscriptions. The cost of these subscriptions vary.

Whether "classic" books are free or not depends on when they were published, mostly. Current copyright law (in the U.S.) protects an author's work from distribution for 70 years plus the life of the author. So, for example, Dostoyevesky's books would be out of copyright, but not Steinbeck's. ... Read More

New Kindle TV Commercial

Created by Angela Kohler and Ithyle Griffiths, our new Kindle commercial was the winner of the Your Amazon Ad contest and is now airing on national TV. Here is what the creators had to say about their ad:

"We received an e-mail about the contest two weeks after Ithyle and I
bought Kindles; I’m st...upid for my Kindle…I love it," said Kohler. "We
were in the airport and everyone was asking about it, so, on a plane
from Japan to Thailand we brainstormed ideas and sketched out little
stories that our character could fall into following different literary
genres. We scribbled out pictures on napkins and made a flipbook,
putting the little scenes in different orders."

Look for it while you're watching your favorite shows, and watch it here on Amazon:

@Carole: I agree that the commercial is meant to highlight how reading can take you away to an imaginary place. The trouble is, you can do that with a $5 paperback just as well as with the Kindle. "You can read a book on it within 60 seconds." isn't a great sales pitch for an item that costs $260.

Amazon needs to use the commercials to emphasize how reading on a Kindle is *better* than reading a paper book.

What I really don't understand is, Amazon has perfectly good Kindle advertisements (in video, no less) on their site already. All they would really have to do to sell the Kindle on TV is break up the 2-minute video into four separate TV spots. ... Read More

IMO, Amazon is making the same mistake that Palm made when advertising the Pre: People aren't going to dump serious money on a tech product without seeing the product in action, regardless of how aesthetically interesting the commercial is. You just can't sell gadgets the same way you'd sell perfume.

loves my Kindle!!!! my 13 1/2 yr old daughter is BEGGING to get her very own Kindle for Christmas! the only downside to Kindle that I see is that I can't share my books with others.....if i could "remove" a book from my Kindle and loan it to a friend....then have it "re-added" to my Kindle when my friend finished it.......that would be a great thing! i've always loved sharing my books with my friends.....and Kindle removes the possiblity of sharing my books.....Read More

If you get the nook! B&N stole Spring Design's design even after B&N signed a non-disclosure with them. Word is the shipping will be held off.... I'm sure its going to be buggy too if it ever gets released from the injunction.
