Bobby Morrow I just wanted to comment on how much I enjoyed the "Personal Training in Practice" workshop, sponsored by ACE in Chapel Hill, N.C. on June 13th and 14th. It was really jammed full of USEABLE new information and "hands-on" techniques to help keep me at the top of my Personal-Training Game...and in front of more clients! BobbyM

Amy Hutchinson Does anyone know if a person's quads are significantly stronger than their hamstrings if it can cause problems with low back pain?
American Council on Exercise at 10:11am June 24
Amy,
Imbalance between quad and hamstrings strength can certainly cause issues at both the knees and hips (which will in turn impact the low back). Literature cites a balanced quad-hamstrings of approximately 3:2 at the knee (ratio between knee extension and flexion) although many athletes have hamstrings that are far stronger without any ... Read Moreproblems. As the hips, dominant hamstrings over the hip flexors (which includes one of the 4 quad muscles) can tilt the pelvis posteriorly. This flattens the low back, changing the loading forces placed upon the lumbar (low back) vertebrae which can precipitate low back pain.

Allan Moltmaker Just getting started with my studies for ACE exam for Personal Trainer. Anyone have any helpful suggestions? I live in SE Michigan area.
American Council on Exercise at 1:30pm June 18
Hi Allan, we get this question a lot!
We recommend approximately 3-6 months to study for the exam, depending on your background, education and experience. Check out our Study Coach Program – it’s free and will help guide your studies: http://www.acefitness.org/ getcertified/studycoachpro gram_pt.aspx . We also get great feedback on the Exam Review Course, available both online and through live webinars: http://www.acefitness.org/ continuingeducation/ptexam review.aspx

I've recently learned how the chemical releases/reactions that occur in our bodies during stress can be harmful. Similar to the fight or flight response; Back in the caveman era, if caveman saw a large threatening animal, hormones would be released into the bloodstream to aid the body to react. Today we don't react physically; therefore causing these hormones to stay in the bloodstream with no purpose. This makes a lot of sense to me! Just another reason why exercise is so important :o)

Swimsuit season is here and the pressure to go sleeveless is rising faster than record high temperatures. So what can the average American, who does not have a personal trainer on standby or daily healthy meals cooked by a professional chef, do to get toned arms and a tighter midriff section...

Bobby Morrow Fit-Tip: Getting fit and healthy is NOT about making HUGE/PAINFUL changes! It's all about making SMALL changes in just a few areas of your life that you are able to live with for the long run! Stay healthy...get fit!!

Bobby Morrow Fitness Tip: DO NOT EAT WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY!!! (has he lost his mind?) What I mean is eat three healthy/balanced meals per day, plus 2-3 healthy/balanced snacks…so that you don’t BECOME hungry. If you eat when you FEEL hungry, your body is attempting to get you to eat extra high calorie foods so it can store it. Where does it store it? That’s right…in the very place you don’t want it. Stay healthy…get fit!

Edna Perkins Hi There! I am an HR professional trying to help my employees manage these stressful times. We have had four lay offs for a total of 30 employees. For a company of 200 that was a good part of our friends who are no longer with us. Any quick excercises people could do at their work stations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Jennifer at 3:10pm May 28
Edna, your employees could also do standing leg extensions either to the side or to the back. It will work their thighs and rear. Also try tricep presses while holding a stapler or another item with a little bit of weight. Of course, they can work their tricep/bicep muscles (arms) with nothing just tell them to really concentrate on the muscle they are working on to create their own resistance. For more ideas you can go to www.squeezeitin.com.
American Council on Exercise at 9:40am May 29
Exercise is an excellent way to relieve stress, and this is a great idea to help employees deal with challenging times.
