This world premiere musical is an adaptation of Geoff Ryman's novel "Was" which weaves together the adventures of two characters who live a century apart. Th...e first story concerns Dorothy Gael, an orphan sent to live in Kansas in the 1870's, who ultimately becomes the inspiration for Dorothy of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The second story follows Jonathan Wood, an actor, whose lifelong obsession with The Wizard of Oz, leads him to Kansas 100 years later hoping to find proof of Dorothy's existence. For the past three years, the American Music Theatre Project in partnership with the Johnny Mercer Foundation has created a unique week-long songwriters intensive, honoring the legacy of Johnny Mercer and the Great American Songbook.
Emerging songwriters from a wide range of genres including, rock, pop, latin, cabaret..., music theatre, country, jazz and more spend a week working with luminaries from the world of songwriting.
Past master teachers have included- Amanda McBroom ("The Rose") Craig Carnelia (Working), Lari White (Green Eyed Soul), Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party), John Bucchino ("Grateful"), David Zippel (City of Angels).
Participating performers have included Brian d'Arcy James, Jason Graae, and Tony Winner Heather Headley.
Participants in the program have won major awards including the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Grant, and the Fred Ebb Award.Read More
