LAST MONTH, the Energy Department released a study concluding that wind turbines could power 20 percent of the eastern electric grid by 2024. But if the nearly decade-long fight over a relatively small wind farm off Cape Cod is any indication, a big obstacle will be extreme not-in-my-back-yard-ism.

In San Francisco there was a battle over Hetch Hetchy located within Yosemite National Park. Eventually a damn was built to form a reservoir, to help the people of San Francisco. Cape Cod my be a battle but eventually people will see that the need for resources will outweigh the want of luxury.

Boston lefties want us to be green to save the world, but not if it impedes their sailing of Cape Cod. This has, for years now, been one of the best example of hypocrisy on the American political scene and in the green movement.
There is plenty of hypocrisy on both sides of the spectrum, but this one has always galled me.

Uhm, we installed nearly 10,000MW ourselves last year & still have more wind capacity than any other country. Of course I'd always like to see more, but I'd say we're quite competitive.

Hey David.... you know it isn't just the Republicans.... it's the 'good 'ol boys club' mentality.... you know.... "what's in your wallet?" If our representatives & congress & senate REALLY cared, wouldn't they be out there on the front lines side by side with the consumer/voter/citizen. OH Wait!!! Silly me.... that would mean they were actually ... See Morelistening & really cared!!! Trust a politician? When I see one take a strong stand & start getting things rolling. Why must we continually wait for peole like T Boone Pickens.... why can't the Power/Electric Companies do something radical.... like put wind turbines on top of ALL those massive & ugly power towers crisscrossing the country? That idea comes from a friend of mine... Mitch Mullen. If half... seriously only half... of what I have seen on TV in the last few years is true.... our technology is there.... we just don't have any positive thinking risk takers. The ones we have are still in the 'what's in it for me?' mode. It has to be the "What's in it for the planet and my children's children?"

The politicians are useless, that is unless you throw them money, or give them a soapbox to ride through the next election. What did they do when the country was on the precipice of economic collapse? They voted themselves raises. Probably to mitigate thier own losses in the stock market. Wind energy will move on despite them for good reasons. No ... See Morepoltitcian wants to be the one that stabbed Jesus to use an analogy. Also... since the Snowball (Wind energy) has gotten bigger and bigger, all they can do now is add thier own "dirty snow" to it or get out of the way. Which means adding thier own pork to the bills that relate to wind energy or try to regulate it in some way that makes them look like they were a part of the great change in in our time. Either way, look for it to be a bigger and bigger part of politics and news in the forseeable future.

Will Vaughan I'm interested in attending this Conference to learn more about the topic but also to learn more about the possibility of transitioning my current skills in the oil and gas industry (land) to the wind industry. Since I'd be paying for the conference myself I'm wondering what people think about the usefulness of these conferences for jobs networking?

"Put aside ... " Don't I know it. This stuff has been a no-brainer since the early 1980s, and we lost 20 years due to the oil glut. Still way too early to declare victory, but I think we're making progress. Took us until 2006 (25 years) to install the first 10,000 megawatts, and we did that much last year alone.

Thanks for the post and link Tom - i did review, alot of opinions! Believe what Scandia proposed was a hybred floating foundation design not yet applied to wind farms but rather drawn from (the Nordhordland?) a bridge foundation design. May be moot as Consumers Energy is proposing a land based wind park. Thanks again.
