ASTD-OC "Hybrid courses seem to answer a challenge in online education. They offer some classroom time to students not able to muster the motivation for a purely online course. At the same time, they’re an acknowledgement that sitting in class for hours week after week might not be the best use of students’ time."

A growing number of schools now offer what's known as “hybrid” courses, which mix an online experience with traditional classroom learning.

ASTD-OC The seventh annual Sloan Survey of Online Learning reveals that online enrollment rose by nearly 17 percent from a year earlier. The survey, a collaborative effort between the Babson Survey Research Group, the College Board and the Sloan Consortium, is the leading barometer of online learning in the United States. Usin...g results from more than 2,500 colleges and universities nationwide, the report finds approximately 4.6 million students were enrolled in at least one online course in fall 2008.

ASTD-OC We are excited to build our club and get started with some wild ideas to add value to the ASTD-OC membership!

Before we get started, we first need to build the infrastructure of the club. This will be our first “problem” to solve and we need your help! We hope you will join us!

It's free to join the Wild Idea Club (you ...must be an ASTD-OC Member), but we would like to have a "headcount." Let us know you're coming: https://www.astdoc.org/calendar/default.asp?v=event&eid=WHSXO19321&d=2/4/2010

ASTD-OC Has your organization experimented with self-access tutorials in lieu of classroom training? Or does your organization question the effect of such self-study “training,” considering it to be primarily window dressing?

There’s a possible compromise: a means of combining the cost-effectiveness of self-paced training wit...h the known learning capabilities of classroom training – the blended learning solution.

This February, we will explore criteria for combining onsite and online techniques to create the most cost-effective and outcomes-enhancing training or education.
You will:
* analyze the intended outcomes of a training program and segment them into the areas which lend themselves best to face-to-face and to online learning.
* utilize a practical example of a potential training program and discuss the “disaggregation of the curriculum” into onsite and online components.
* leave with a decision matrix you can use for future situations where they may want to blend onsite and online learning

I'd like to attend, but involved in a grant project that day. I will say that as a student of Univ of Phoenix, I do mostly online classes combined with onsite week-long sessions periodically. I've found the web-based format to be a great experience. It is however not the best for everyone... in terms of workforce development, the web-based format ... See Moreis determined quite a bit by the type of material to be learned and what types of direct feedback from workers is needed. My organization has shifted toward web-based training for about 70-80% of the topics, but still needs the rest to be face-to-face. I'm not including hybrid webinars or video-conferenced session in that point. I hope you post an audio or video of the sesion n the 24th for me to download later. Great topic.

Great insights, Geoff. Sorry we'll miss you at the event. (Precisely the kind of discussion we're expecting to have.) :) No promises on the video, but we'll see what Mel Aclaro (veep, Communications) can pull out for us.
