Laura Gallagher

Laura Gallagher Hi! I work in downtown Annapolis and would like to know how to go about getting a recycling program started. We throw away tons of cardboard, plastic and glass every day. As of right now there is no system for recycling pickup. I am trying to get other companies interested. Any suggestions or ideas?

Nathan Rhinesmith What is the largest diameter branches that I can put out to be picked up? Also, how long can I leave the branches that I want to be picked up? I am cutting down a tree and was hoping to get most of the branches picked up curbside, the trunk I will have to find somewhere else to dispose of right? I also planned on ma...king bundles of branches using twine, is this a good idea? Thanks

Nathan,

Place leaves, grass, and brush in bags or other reusable container of your choice marked with an “X” visible to the curbside collection crew.

If branches or brush are not in a container, they must be bundled. Branches must be no longer than 4 feet in length and no larger than 4 inches in diameter.... See More

Stumps and branches over 4 inches but smaller than 30 inches in diameter are accepted at both the Glen Burnie and Sudley Convenience Centers. Larger stumps must go to Millersville.

Hope this helps!

Chris Question for AACo.: Are clear plastic sandwich bags recyclable? Syran wrap? Super light clear plastic used for food packaging? How about the stuff shown below? If yes, what are they recycled into? It just seems to me that they're unrecyclable for some reason.

Hello Chris,

Yes, Anne Arundel County does accept all types of plastic bags and shrink wrap & film for recycling. They are sold and made into plastic decking and other plastic items.

However, we do not accept chip and snack bags/wrappers that are usually made of cellophane. Hope this helps. Thanks for your question!

Kelly Kotche Styrofoam...I did not think it was one of the items you could recycle; it it not on the "Items for Recycling" list on the recyclemoreoften.com website...but the school has it on a poster of items they are encouraging the kids to recycle in the trash cans in the lunch room...please clarify someone if styrofoam container...s should go in the recyle. If so, it should be advertised more. Styrofoam is an alternative to plastic and many companies use it...if it can be recycled, I'd like to know.

Hello Kelly,

Anne Arundel County does not accept Styrofoam for recycling. However, Styrofoam packing “peanuts... See More” are accepted for reuse at mail/postal stores such as the UPS Store or Parcel Plus. Please call ahead for availability. Other types of Styrofoam, such as food containers or blocks, are accepted at the Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers in Crofton, their phone number is 410-451-8340. Otherwise, you may dispose of it in your regular trash.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools have a different recycling program, which accepts Styrofoam. I recommend you visit AACPS’s recycling page at www.aacps.org/html/press/recycling.asp for more details about their program. The program is managed/overseen by the Board of Education.

Oh good, as long as their program accepts it, that is fine. I just didnt' want them adding a bunch of non-recycable stuff in and messing it up. Thanks for the response.

I too do not have recycling in my condo community - Tidewater and the HOA is against adding that because they don't want HOA fees to go up and let's face it - half of the Board is so old they don't even know how to reclycle and can't accept change.

Any ideas of how to get them to come around??

Hi Tricia!

We do not currently offer wheeled containers to our residential customers. As the recycling program develops and future opportunities present themselves, wheeled containers may be an enhancement that we will be able to provide. We have also heard that some residents have bought casters from a hardware store and bolted them to the ... See Morebottom of their yellow container.

Keep in mind, you are not restricted to using the recycling containers the County makes available; you can also use a container of choice with wheels if that works best for your needs. If using a container of choice, please remember to mark containers clearly with an “X” visible to the collection crew so that they know it is recycling. Also, there is never a limit to the number of containers you may place at the curb for recycling.

Cris I think recycling and trash pick up in AACo should be switched up, to help to stress the point as to why it's so important to recycle. Have recycling pick up 2x/wk and trash only once. I believe that will help folks to get the message. ;)

Christina I just moved to Glen Burnie in the development of Cromwell Fountain. I am confused as to why there is only recycling pick up for the town houses toward the back of the community.
