Ecce Crucem Domini!
Fugite partes adversae!
Vicit Leo de tribu Iuda,
Radix David! Alleluia!
Behold the Cross of the Lord!
Flee thou o evil parties!
The Lion of the tribe of Judah conquered,
The root of David! Alleluia!

Sermon by St. Anthony Padua
8:21am Jun 23

Anthony of Padua was a successful preacher. Business would end during his visits. The night before the sermon, the 'whole countryside became alive with flitting lights as people began to converge from all sides.' Even today the phenomenon can sometimes be seen.

Anthony of Padua is celebrated in his home city of Lisbon (whose patron he is) on the traditional 13th of June, with street parties, traditional dancing, fire works, bonfires and of course the scent of sardines, a hint at his famous miracle with the fish.

Anthony of Padua , when he had given his brilliant first sermon, received this from Francis of Assisi (1224): “It pleases me that you should teach the friars sacred theology, provided that in such studies they do not destroy the spirit of holy prayer and devotedness, as contained in the Rule.”

Anthony of Padua was proclaimed Doctor of the Church on the 16th of January, 1946, and is sometimes called 'Evangelical Doctor'.

*From* where the Saint was born. The mural decorates a small chapel containing the font where he was baptised.

It would be interesting to see a picture of the mural and of the chapel posted on FB :)

Anthony of Padua , says the Catholic Encyclopaedia, left his tongue behind, 'uninjured, fresh and of a lively red colour'. Indeed the Lord loves to give us little signs.

Anthony of Padua I don't see how it is *ironic* that S. Francis is not as popular in India and I was not aware of any popularity contest. S. Francis is the patron of what was the tiny island-city of Goa, now called Tiswadi.

Anthony of Padua Simply amazing. The page now has 1500+ fans, approaching Sexagesima Sunday.

Anthony of Padua True, indeed. One of the greatest speakers and theologians ever. It's a pity more attention is given to his miraculous works, great though those are.

Anthony of Padua 1000+ on the Feast day of Pope S. Fabian and S. Sebastian. Best wishes to all devotees of S. Anthony.

Anthony of Padua 700+, just in time for Christmas. The joy and the peace of Christmas with all devotees of S. Anthony and visitors of the page and both.

Anthony of Padua 600+ this weekend, as we march up to Christmas.

Anthony of Padua 500+ tonight. It's looking like a good Advent. I will have pictures soon of a rather nice S. Anthony statue at the local church.

Anthony of Padua We have discovered today that we have 400+ devotees of the Saint. Most excellent. May he continue to pray for us all.

Anthony of Padua Importantly, S. Antony was born Portuguese, outside the walls of Lisboa. The residents of Lisboa know him as Santo Antônio de Lisboa, if I'm not mistaken.

Anthony of Padua is celebrated by the Roman Church on the 13th of June, when he died in Arcella, strengthened by an apparition of Our Lord and in the "odor of sanctity," at the age of thirty-six. That's tomorrow. He was canonised by HH Gregory IX within a year, the fastest canonisation ever. Boas festas para os Portugueses de Lisboa.
