There are rumors that Creed faked his own death.
Apparently Apollo Creed had been blackmailing Madoff and Madoff had been putting funds in Creed's Swiss bank account to keep him quiet.
When Madoff was caught, Creed realized his game was up.
So, Creed faked his own death and absconded with about half of all Madoff's ill-gotten gains.

I'm waiting for the directors of Tropic THurnder to do the movie version of The Travels of Apollo Creed. I hope they get Robert Downey Jr to play the guy who plays the part of the guy who is playing Apollo Creed.

Unfortunately, his death was not faked. If it were faked, we would've come up with some master genius marketing scheme.
