Arizona Gourds

Arizona Gourds Had a great time at our local gourd patch meeting tonight. It was a holiday party - early, since we don't meet again until after Christmas. We had tons and tons of great food and door prizes. Almost everyone won something! The tree with our donated gourd ornaments was on display for the evening and everyone enjoyed seeing it all lit up.

Sounds like fun! Wish there were more gourd artists/enthusiasts in Massachusetts. I'm getting inspired to organize the ones there are and start a chapter. Maybe next year!

Arizona Gourds I just added an Amazon search box to the left side of this page. You can use this to find gourd books and gift items from Amazon - and by using this link you are supporting the Arizona Gourds website. It costs you nothing to use this link and it helps keep the site going; what could be better than that? :)

I should have mentioned that the search box is on the left side of the Arizona Gourds "FANS" facebook page. (If you see this on your regular status or news page you'll have to click on the blue Arizona Gourds name to go to the fans page.)

Can you recommend a wood burning system' brands, etc? I am new to the hobby and attempted to use a basic burner and was very disappointed (ex. uneven temps). Fortunately I practiced on a scrap piece and did not ruin my project!

Arizona Gourds I'll be doing a presentation at the Northwest Valley Patch just outside of Phoenix today - theme is "What the Heck do I do with this Bur?" Hope to see some of you Facebook Phoenicians there! Tomorrow, I'm teaching two classes for their patch.

Yes, I have lefties in my classes. They do best when they use multidirectional structured tooth burs instead of steel cutters, which are designed for right handed people. You can also get a Foredom or other carving tools that run in reverse.

Arizona Gourds I just added the etched dichroic glass to the glass page on my website. I plan on making more of this eventually, so if you have ideas for simple designs you'd like to see, make a comment here.

We are in a large room with tiled floors (it's an art league building). 3 people brought big dust collectors which have kept the flying dust to a minimum.

Arizona Gourds I should be doing other things right now, but decided this gourd needed me more. :) I added some carving and a couple more pieces of coral. It's not a drastic change, but I think it improved the piece. It's fun to play with new ideas.

I see you added more detail to the filigree such as your yellow brick road? and the red on the sides, nice touch. I never cease to learn from the depth of your imagination!

Arizona Gourds Experimenting with leafing techniques. Lately, I've been finding myself drawn to more contemporary designs.

I think it needs more contrast at the top. I may take one of the wavy lines and do some stippled carving just to add some interest. It needs.... something. The gold leafing looks more interesting than this photo shows, but it needs more contrast too. I probably should have left more of the black undercoating showing through. That's why this is an experiment.

I think this one is lovely the way it is.

Arizona Gourds Thanks for all the comments on the engraved glass. I am going to try some more of this and will eventually put them on the website. I'll try some bigger pieces next time - it's fun playing with different kinds of stuff. I think they'll make nice jewelry if they are wirewrapped or if one of the glue on bails is attached.

Arizona Gourds I just found a supplier for a small size inverted cone bur. The new burs are 5mm in diameter (1/8" shank) and are good for getting into tighter areas. These burs are already on the carving burs page. If you order one in the next three days, I'll include a free bur cleaning brush or a couple of assorted diamond burs ...with your order. Send me an email or a facebook message if you have a preference.
