The city had been pursuing the designation since 2000, and the downtown part of Las Vegas Boulevard was designated a state scenic byway in 2001.

The tail end of tropical storm Patricia is making its way into the Sierra- snow level will be low enough to close the pass temporarily- should be open again before the weekend... dogwoods at Big Trees should be reaching their peak.

It's going to be windy, which may blow some of the color out of the trees higher up, but ...the lower temperature and moisture will have everything dazzling when the sun comes out- cozy fires, hot cocoa, hearty soup and crusty bread... gotta love fall!Read More

The dogwoods should be near their peak next week- best bets for viewing- take the "Arnold Byway" for a quick diversion just east of Arnold and then stop in at the Calaveras Big Trees State park for a hike (be sure to check out the little visitor's center- worth the stop. Continue on up the pass- if this week's storm doesn't knock all the leaves off... Read More you'll get the first spectacular grove just over the pass.

There are a few scattered groves beyond that- then you hit silver creek with some nice cottonwoods. Just past that, the old Scossa cow camp and the Chalmers mansion are framed with aspens. The east fork Carson River has beautiful cottonwoods then head out to the Grover Hot Springs for a soak before retiring to Sorenen's Resort for dinner- don't miss the beef stew- to die for!

Have a great ride and make sure to post some photos for us!

Darlene....Highway 4 is a wonderful stretch of road to see the beautiful fall colors. Big Trees is a must, but make sure you keep going up to Lake's Alpine and Mosquito. If you choose to continue over the Pass, you will drop into the Markleeville valley. Along the East Carson River you'll find some beautiful golden Dogwood and Aspen trees! It's a wonderful trip! Have fun!!

Say goodbye to gray freeways and brown haze and head for the hills. CaliforniaFallColor.com tells you where you can find the best fall foliage within driving distance of Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway Association Great article about the fall colors... snow in the high country and rain last night has brought the crispness of fall to scenic Ebbetts Pass. The writer failed to mention hiking among the crimson-hued dogwoods at the Calaveras Big Trees State Park- now's a spectacular time for a hike!

Highly trained color consultants no doubt have at least 1,527 names for yellow. I had three: school bus yellow, submarine yellow and midlife-crisis-Corvette yellow (also comes in cherry red).
