Art & The Public Purpose: A New Framework

Art & The Public Purpose: A New Framework May 2010
awaken us. May we see truly, feel deeply, represent with awesome
presence the holiness of our task. May we burst the cocoon that
normalizes greed at the expense of suffering. May we spread our
brilliant wings, filling the world with so much beauty and meaning that
our limitations transform into manifestations of mo...ral grandeur. May we love and be loved, see and be seen, heal and be healed as never before.

Art & The Public Purpose: A New Framework

Art & The Public Purpose: A New Framework 2010 could be a game-changing year, with a new WPA—public service jobs for artists—on the 75th anniversary of the first one. But first we need to show our strength. Before New Year's, get 10—or 20, or 100—new signatures for Art & The Public Purpose: A New Framework. Be the change you want to see!

Art & The Public Purpose: A New Framework What is the most powerful argument for art's public purpose? What persuades you more than anything else? Here's a link to some of my reasons.

Art & The Public Purpose: A New Framework "The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions which have been hidden by the answers," wrote the great James Baldwin. In our day, we must ask what we value as a society, hacking our way through stock answers about budget priorities to discover who we truly are. What will we stand for? Endorse Art & The Public Purpose...: A New Framework, and stand together for a bold new investment in culture, and a policy recognizing that culture holds the key to a future we can believe in.

Art & The Public Purpose: A New Framework

Art & The Public Purpose: A New Framework Imagine what it would be like to never have another argument with someone who sets the terms as "art versus the essentials." The usual objection to making an investment in arts’ public purpose is cost. Total state spending on prisons and punishment is around $52 billion. We've spent over $915 billion on wars since 2001..., an average cost of $315 million a day—that’s 2 annual NEA budgets daily, 7 days a week.

It isn't about money: US public arts expenditure amounts to pennies per person. It's about social imagination and sustainable community, about investing in beauty and meaning. About what we value and who we are as a people. Stand for a bold new investment in culture.
