Product of the week: Cadmo

What was the inspiration behind the Cadmo?
Cadmo is designed like a veil or a monastic quiet insular
robe – a wrapping of light, a source that reveals a slice of light and focuses
and projects lights to the ceiling. It is a curvature of metal or glass that is
like a spine in space.
How does
your design process differ when you design lighting and when you design other
home furnishing products?
It is
imperative to start with the source then develop a form and concept around it.
Although one can also think sculpturally and conceptually of the idea, and then
develop the technical aspects of the lamp although the latter usually becomes
merely decorative, than highly functional. Since I make so many diverse lights
for very different brands I tend to work in both directions.
How would
you define your design aesthetic? How does the Cadmo fit into this aesthetic?
I define my
work as Sensual Minimalism, or Sensualism, where objects communicate, engage,
and inspire yet remain fairly minimal. They can speak simply and directly,
without superfluousness. My work is a marriage of organic and pure geometry,
technology and materials.
The Cadmo
is available in black, white and red – any particular rhyme or reason behind
this color scheme?
The black
and white are very simple and can fit in any décor. I would never choose red
but it is very high Italian deign oriented. If it looks good in red it is a
classic. Artemide were kind enough to make me a custom Cadmo for my home in
baby pink. :)
What
inspires your design process? Is it always the same or does it change with the
product?
The best
way to get inspiration is by being 100% alive in this world with no prejudices,
no pre-associations, no biases, no-stalgia. I always found myself having more
ideas, than companies could ever produce. My discipline is to absorb everything
I can and then I sketch for hours developing ideas. My mind is full of
information, of experiences, of dialectic, and most importantly my mind is
obsessed with our contemporary life, with the moment, with the world around me,
so the ideas are constantly flowing. There is no difference between designing a
watch or a car - It has always been my mission to touch our human emotions, and
inspire us.
