November's concert celebrates the cycle of life with two brilliant scores by two very different twentieth-century master composers cast against a touching Requiem from 1893.
Giacomo Puccini, better known for great dramatic operas like Tosca and La Boheme, wrote this touching little dedication, I crisantemi (Chrysanthe...mums) to the memory of Duke Amadeo di Savoia.
American composer Aaron Copland gave a title to his most famous ballet, Appalachian Spring, well after it had been written, but somehow its music is inextricably linked with the image of simple, mountain life and the blossoming of spring.
By avoiding mention of hellfire and brimstone in his lovely Requiem, French composer Gabriel Fauré wanted to create a gentle dedication to loved ones who had passed. He succeeded in creating a poignant and melodious tribute that will feature the voices of the Asheville Symphony Chorus in warm harmony.
During intermission, students will "Pass the Hat" to solicit support for the Asheville Symphony Guild's Music Education in the Schools and Music Summer Camp programs, so bring your wallets and be generous!Read More

In the summer of 2008, the ASO was given a generous challenge grant of $40,000 towards a new piano for the Asheville Symphony. We started our “Note by Note” campaign to raise an additional $88,000 ($1000 per key) to purchase a new Steinway. The Symphony Guild, Asheville Symphony musicians, and the Chorus have all purc...hased keys. The Asheville Area Piano Forum made a generous contribution, as have many of you. Currently, we have almost $31,000 in pledges and cash towards the challenge gift of $40,000.
Recently, Daniel Meyer was in NYC and asked piano soloist Konstantin Soukhovetski (see photo) to join him at Steinway Hall to help judge a piano. Comparing the recommended piano to others that were available, both Daniel and Konstantin agree that it is an excellent choice.
The cost of this piano is $80,000, so we are very close--less than $10,000 to reach our $40,000 challenge gift! If you have already made a gift, thank you. If you would like to help with this project, or if you know of anyone who would be interested, please let us know! info@ashevillesymphony.orgRead More
