Association of British Orchestras likes this article, but while we’re delighted at the coverage of our opera members, would have liked more about the depth, diversity and innovative spirit of British orchestras during the past decade. Why is more space devoted to the Berlin Phil than our own orchestras? Just five British orchestras are mentioned, plus LSO Live.

Association of British Orchestras A fresh campaign has been started by the Waste and Resources Action Programme in order to get Brits to recycle their small items of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

The initiative was launched with a concert on December 1st, the group hopes to raise awareness of the need for preventing kettles, toasters... and mobile phones being sent to landfill instead of certified recycling plants.

The event saw Hear Me Now! - finalists from the BBCs Last Choir Standing show - and the Really Rubbish Orchestra - who play instruments made out of WEEE - perform to passersby in London.

Association of British Orchestras All that you ever wanted to know about fundraising but were afraid to ask!

This course aims to dispel the mystique of fundraising and show that anyone can fundraise successfully provided they follow some simple rules, enjoy communicating with people, can write well and research thoroughly, and are persistent.

It will cov...er fundraising from:

* charitable trusts and foundations
* membership schemes and high level giving
* corporate sponsorship and patronage schemes
* events and other one-off projects.

By the end of this course, participants should have a working knowledge of the many different ways to raise money, know how best to apply that knowledge, know how to plan a fundraising strategy and write applications and proposals, and have a clear understanding of what NOT to do when trying to attract funds.

The course includes a 6-month email follow-up service, answering basic questions that have occurred since the course took place.

This workshop is tailored for fundraising beginners (who may not be working in a development department) and those who are simply interested in learning more about their colleagues' responsibilities.

Association of British Orchestras Music And Me - dispelling the jargon behind health and safety on the platform

During this 3 part course we will look at health and safety and how this practically affects people working in the music and entertainment industry.

The areas covered will be:

Policy writing:

• Duties of employers and employees
• Ex...amples of good and bad policies
• A brief description of safety management systems that delegates could use in their organisation effectively

Risk Assessment:

• What is risk assessment?
• Why do we need it?
• The five steps to risk assessment
• A risk assessment template
• A practical session in a work environment

Manual handling:

• Why is manual handling awareness important?
• Who can be affected by manual handling injuries?
• How can people be affected by manual handling injuries?
• Examples of bad manual handling
• How can we avoid injuries and carry out manual handling tasks effectively and safely?

By the end of the course, delegates will have had a practical insight in these 3 key areas. There will be an opportunity to put what you learn into practice throughout the day with group sessions, demonstrating that health and safety needn't be simply a chore, but an easy and integral part of the day to day running of your organisation. Delegates will be given electronic templates as well as help sheets after completing the relevant course area.
