I think what's really interesting about this debate is that it forces us to look at the bigger question about what the essence of volunteering is. My view is that volunteering is essentially a giving activity that we do freely to achieve some kind of beneficial social impact. This kind of activity has taken many forms down the ages and it's ... These issues are very real, but I think it's more fruitful to set this debate in a wider context. - Patrick Daniels (my views not AVM's)

I, like many others, am sickened by the news today of a nursery worker who was convicted of enabling the assault of children in her care, as well as abusing them herself. This is a case that came to light by coincidence and not because any of the children concerned made any complaints or comments...

That reminds me David, I will send you electronic versions of everything.

One of the difficulties of this whole thing is that for so long there has been such under investment in volunteer management it is hard for us all to accept that this funding will not solve everything. We need to ensure that oour organisations invest on volunteer management and training and supervision of volunteer managers, to ensure that there is a solid and long lasting legacy to this funding.

Given the practical difficulties that many volunteer managers may face in trying to be part of the small consultancy group, this (and of course the avm website on www.volunteermanagers.org.uk) is an ideal place for people to express their views.... Read More

And of course, funding permitting we hope that there can be a member of the AVM board on the group - who can be there in the capacity of AVM director, independently representing the views of members and co-professionals.

Article published in VE's Volunteer Magazine, Sept 2009.It's been reported that the recession in the UK is coming to an end.  This doesn't however mean an end to redundancies in all sectors, including our own.  I've heard that the Third Sector is hit by the effects of a recession 12-18 months l...
