Association of Volunteer Managers
At the AVM AGM a number of members and non-members indicated that
they were either interested in helping AVM as a 'website activist' or a
'peer leader'.

There was an interest and need indicated in
developing members confidence in using the AVM website as understanding
all it can do was the blockage for engagement. As I felt... and still feel
exactly the same, I am hosting a 2 hour session lead by the one and
only, Patrick Daniels, AVMs very own website guru, to help members
unlock their fears and become true website activists for AVM.

When: 2.30pm to 4.30pm, 20th November, 2009.
Where: Scope, 6 Market Road, N7 9PW
Cost: FREE!

And I will find some tea, coffee and biscuits too!

RSVP: by the 19th of Nov, 09 There
are only 8 places and originally this was an invitiation to those who
had volunteered to become more active on-line at the AGM. However, we have some places left so I can open it up to all members on a first come,
first serve basis. If you can't make this one, but would like to come along to another in future, please let us know your interest and your requirements.

To register: email nikki.squelch@scope.org.uk

Many thanks and hopefully will see a few of you soon. Oh!

All of the five young people are using their free time to commit to volunteering and in the process they're making a difference to other people. The film was made by BBC Connect and Create a scheme that offers BBC staff skills development opportunities that also benefit the wider community...

I think what's really interesting about this debate is that it forces us to look at the bigger question about what the essence of volunteering is. My view is that volunteering is essentially a giving activity that we do freely to achieve some kind of beneficial social impact. This kind of activity has taken many forms down the ages and it's ... These issues are very real, but I think it's more fruitful to set this debate in a wider context. - Patrick Daniels (my views not AVM's)

Association of Volunteer Managers We've written up the work from the AVM AGM. In particular, it includes the result of our discussion about what members would like AVM to do, as well as the write up of the ways in which we can gauge the impact of volunteer managers. http://www.volunteermanagers.org.uk/avm-agm-2009-follow

I, like many others, am sickened by the news today of a nursery worker who was convicted of enabling the assault of children in her care, as well as abusing them herself. This is a case that came to light by coincidence and not because any of the children concerned made any complaints or comments...

Dave Conroy Investing in developing volunteer managers! With around a million quid to spend what would you absolutely do first and why ... and then what would you do with the rest of the money?

That reminds me David, I will send you electronic versions of everything.

One of the difficulties of this whole thing is that for so long there has been such under investment in volunteer management it is hard for us all to accept that this funding will not solve everything. We need to ensure that oour organisations invest on volunteer management and training and supervision of volunteer managers, to ensure that there is a solid and long lasting legacy to this funding.

Given the practical difficulties that many volunteer managers may face in trying to be part of the small consultancy group, this (and of course the avm website on www.volunteermanagers.org.uk) is an ideal place for people to express their views.... Read More

And of course, funding permitting we hope that there can be a member of the AVM board on the group - who can be there in the capacity of AVM director, independently representing the views of members and co-professionals.
