Extended Info

Program Information: The Little 5 Points Music Center is a community music school in Atlanta, GA.  The Center provides an array of traditional and innovative music education programs to children and adults, from beginners through pre professionals at its facilities in Little 5 Points and a second facility in Decatur, GA.  The administration and faculty consists of highly trained and experienced team of professional musicians and educators, many with graduate level training from the nation's leading music schools.

The Music Center embraces and supports a variety of musical styles and traditions, including classical, jazz, rock, folk, and experimental music.  The Center seeks to offer widespread community access to the educational methods developed by serious musicians and in leading musical and educational institutions, to the enrichment and benefit of individual students and the local community.   Unlike most commercial and privately owned music schools and services in Atlanta, the Center offers instruction on a sliding scale to eligible students and at no cost to immigrant families affiliated with the Center for Pan Asian Community Services.

Several other core values inform the design and implementation of Music Center programs.  One is the conviction that anybody can and everybody should study music.  Another: despite strong contrary messages from popular culture and the music industry, fame and wealth are not the aims of musical practice.  The Center operates under the assumption that all aesthetic acts, and particularly disciplined musical studies, positively impact the individual and can deepen the connection between individuals and communities.  Says founder and director Phil Sims, "We understand music is not only enjoyable, but also a tool for both personal and social transformation."

A friend of mine told me this weekend that his bright son - in the honors program at UGA - wanted to make his life in music. What kind of life would that be,

The fun starts at 2 pm in Little 5. That's when the music starts and cupcakes arrive. Some other highlights: at 2pm high school students go make giant skeleton puppets to lead the parade; at 4 pm the parade down Euclid and Moreland kicks off with Alec and Camille playing intense drum and bass covers of Lightning Bol...t tunes on our float; the first ever Halloween Pumpkin Drop is set for 6 pm at the Music Center, about the time a really scary witch performs Henry Cowell's solo piano work "The Banshee." Scary weather, but still fun.Read More

A film set to Cowell's piano piece of the same name. A lot of subtle things with the image are lost in the compression, but you get the idea.
