The Carnegie was built (in '26) on the site of the Ewell Hotel, so the land is returning to its roots. Its in the Late Commercial Style - the architect was Geoffrey Lloyd Preacher, from S. Carolina (a Clemson grad). He also designed the Bon Air apartments on Juniper, the Hentry Grady Hotel, Atlanta City Hall, and Bass High School (now loft apartments on Euclid)

Preacher also designed the Medical Arts Building which has again been covered in an illegal billboard - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=279020914234.

Well, at least you tried. That would have been helpful. Hopefully at least a note will be in there advising folks to call to be sure? Still, this is a very cool event and I look forward to being able to participate as never before.

It sits on North Peachtree Road, far from the street and shrouded in a thicket of trees. If you're in a hurry and headed for town, chances are you'd never even notice it was there.

I'm a little confused. Isn't North Peachtree Rd in Dunwoody, not Brookhaven? The address provided at the end of the ajc article is Peachtree, not North Peachtree, although it opens with "North Peachtree." ??????

For the past week I’ve been looking through the Federal Writers’ Project life histories at the Library of Congress site. These narratives were gathered between 1936 and 1940 in most of Georgia’s major cities. ...

Old pic: John W. Heidt Hall, the first dormitory for women erected in 1896. Named in memory of John W. Heidt, President of the Board of Trustees for twenty years (1889-1909). In 1911, after a fire struck the 1884 administration building, music classes were taught here. In 1939, this dorm was torn down and replaced with Paul Jones Hall.

Atlanta Preservation Center Drove through Morningside on Rock Springs today. Carmate asked: "What is the history behind this neighborhood? How old is it? All the houses have triangular points on them. What are those architectural elements?" Please help. Do you know the answers?

Atlanta Preservation Center Don't forget your lunch. See you there. I'm the geeky looking one who thinks old buildings and history and things long past are the bomb. Do people still say the "the bomb"?

I don't think they say it anymore, but old buildings and history ARE the bomb :)

I think I've heard, recently, young 'hipsters' say that something was 'sick'...meaning NOT that it was 'horrible and disgusting' but rather that it was 'interesting and impressive'.
Funny, the metamorphosis of slang.

Atlanta Preservation Center This FB Page is dedicated to Atlanta, but lovers of history and architecture can find much to appreciate throughout the world. I recently visited Vancouver, and stumbled upon the 1930 Marine Blg and its amazing exterior. Incredible detail of aquatic scenes, nautical exploration and trade, wildlife, and modes of trans...portation. See these pics and links to this Art Deco delight. Please share photos of historic buildings, homes, landscapes, and neighborhoods from your travels.

Atlanta Preservation Center Spare cash anyone? One of Atlanta's oldest gems is for sale. Completed in 1897, the English-American Building, now named the Flatiron Building, was designed by New York architect Bradford Gilbert. Gilbert had come to Atlanta as the principle architect of the '95 Cotton States and International Expo. The Flatiron ...Bldg was renovated in the 1980s. A beautiful building.
