For Academic IELTS in Task I, candidates need to describe information given in a graph, table, chart, diagram or process. Task I of General IELTS involves writin...g a letter which could be either formal or informal. Both tests require an essay format for Task II.
The earlier parts of the General IELTS reading test relate to advertisement style reading passages; in Academic IELTS all reading material is in a longer passage format.
