I am writing from Gaza, where I am working to establish and implement Austcare’s emergency response activities, following three-weeks of heavy conflict in January. The bombing of Gaza has worsened an already dire humanitarian problem...

Hi Liz,
Thanks for your post! Yes, Austcare (under the new name of ActionAid Australia) will be launching child sponsorship in Australia around mid-year.
Implementing child sponsorship requires stable, ongoing funding of long-term projects over a minimum of 5 years so at first ActionAid Australia will work with communities in a limited number of countries - and then add more countries as more sponsors come on board!
At first we will work with communities in Cambodia for child sponsorship. We plan to expand this to Uganda later in the year.
If you would like to provide support for our emergency work in regions like Gaza, we really encourage you to make a donation through our website (https://www.austcare.org.au/donatenow/gi ve-now.aspx). Just this week we started distributing hygiene, kitchen and first-aid kits to those most in need.
Any more questions, let us know!

I am writing from Thailand, where I have been recently visiting Austcare’s Burmese refugee program. The camps along the Thai-Burma border now form the second oldest refugee settlement in the world and are home to over 150,000 people...

Hi Tundey, Austcare doesn't have a formal internship program but we do welcome volunteers. When volunteer opportunities are available, they are advertised on http://www.austcare.org.au/get-involved/ volunteerinternships.aspx

Although responding to emergencies is a crucial part of what we do at Austcare, equally important is helping people prepare for possible future disasters...

I recently visited Aceh to train Austcare field office staff on financial management and to monitor Austcare’s field projects. Following the 2004 Asian tsunami, major recovery efforts have seen substantial amounts of aid go to rebuilding the Aceh Province in Indonesia...

Thanks for the positive feedback, Steve. It's always great to how interested our supporters are in our work!
Thanks, Kristen (and the Austcare team)

We are pleased to announce to all our supporters and friends that Austcare will formally join the ActionAid International (AAI) network and will become ActionAid in 2009...

On 3 May 2008, Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar (Burma), causing widespread devastation destroying crops, flattening villages and leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless. Estimates put the death toll at over 84,500 people with a further 53,800 unaccounted for...

Running from Sunday 1 June to Friday 13 June 2008, 13 SBS special language programs took part in the Cyclone Nargis Radiothon Appeal, spreading the word about the situation in Myanmar and asking Australian residents to dig deep and donate generously to help those in desperate need...

"Getting lost in Aceh ended up being a great indicator of development!" When I first arrived in Aceh one of the most difficult logistical issues was simply getting around 'town'. Many areas were not yet cleared of debris and the state of the roads left a lot to be desired...

In developing countries, women's lives are often characterised by poverty, violence and high maternal death rates. In the winter edition of our 'In the field' newsletter, you can read about Austcare's work to combat and raise awareness of gender-based violence in Sri Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia...
