Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia's Hindustani flute performance | The Indian Classical Music Circle of Austi

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, the internationally renowned exponent of the bansuri or bamboo flute, surprisingly does not come from a long lineage of flautists. His father was a famous wrestler who had aspirations of his son following in his footsteps.

Austin Flute Club
The Indian Classical Music Circle of Austin (ICMCA) is proud to present the fifth concert of this, our 18th year, an evening of enchanting music on the flute, by:
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia
(“The Emperor of the Flute”)
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is the greatest exponent of the bamboo flute today. His musical journey beg...an in Allahabad, an Indian holy city by the banks of the Ganges. The son of a wrestler, his early lifestyle seemed to be preparing him to follow his father, with early morning dips in the Ganges, a strict regimen of physical fitness and wrestling at the local gymnasium. A career in music, let alone ascension to the ranks of the greatest musicians, seemed remote.
What muse drew young Hariprasad to the flute is a mystery - his family expected him to take up something more “manly,” like wrestling, or if he failed at that, herding cattle. Perhaps it was the river that cast its spell. Regardless, the flute that he stole as a child to make his own was to change his life forever. The hard struggle to make something of his talent then followed. His formal learning was at the feet of several masters of the Indian classical tradition, the greatest of them being Annapurna Devi, the daughter and disciple of the legendary Ustad Allaudin Khan.
His journey has since taken him all over the globe with performances in all major music centers and festivals in all major continents. He has established schools to teach music, including the Vrindaban Charitable Trust in Bombay, India and the Brindavan Gurukul, Inc., in the United States. He has also been the Head of the Indian Music Department at the Rotterdam Music Conservatory for over a decade now. The Government of India bestowed upon him its second-highest civilian honor, and he has been hailed by fans around the world as the “Bansuri Samraat,” or “Emperor of the Flute.”
At the end of it all, though, Chaurasia is inseparable from his art - he is the flute, and the flute is him. His titles are many and the accolades for his music overflow with adjectives, but everyone who has heard him is convinced that the descriptions are, if anything, understated. A critic described his music thus: “… reminiscent of a sage in deep meditation, a young mother with her child, a river flowing gently …you will be completely mesmerized.”
ICMCA is honored to have the opportunity to host Pandit Chaurasia, and invites Austin’s music-lovers to join us for an evening of musical delight and enchantment. Details are as follows:
