In 1928, The Young Men’s Business League (YMBL) of Austin recognized the serious community threat of youth tuberculosis and became dedicated to making a significant contribution to the solution. The YMBL members established the Austin YMBL Summer Sunshine Camps in Zilker Park to provide afflicted local youths and economically disadvantaged youth an environment in which to gain weight, grow strong once again, and enjoy the sunshine.
Today, Austin YMBL Sunshine Camps is still serving youth living near or below the poverty line (defined as $20,650 for a family of four) but our purpose has shifted to providing these youth with opportunities for leadership, personal growth and a better education to help break the cycle of poverty.
