AKA New York was born in the spring of 2004 when three ELLE fashion editors (Abigale Levinson, Karen Reinitz, and Ana Maria Pimentel) decided to start their own line. They felt that there was something missing in the market: clothing that was fashionable yet accessible. Years of experience in the magazine industry was ...the perfect platform on which to build a successful fashion brand. Their philosophy is to combine elements of each of their styles to create one unique sensibility. They interpret key looks in the way they want to wear them, creating pieces that encourage one's personal style to shine through. The combination of the designers' personalities coupled with their diverse sense of style is what AKA New York is all about.

Black Orchid launched in March 2008 with designer Julien Jarmoune who, feeling the market was saturated with ostentatious designs, decided to create an elegant basic jean that would appeal to women of all ages. The origins behind the name lie in the fact that a Black Orchid is rare and highly desirable. Jarmoune likens... Black Orchid denim to the flower because it has a rarity and beauty found in something so basic and affordable.
