Brevoort Savings Bank of Brooklyn
9730 Seaview Avenue
Bayview Shopping Center

The Grand Opening of the Brevoort Savings Bank of Brooklyn took place on October 6, 1960 at 9AM. Many dignitaries will be on hand to celebrate the occasion. There are fabulous free gifts to those who open a savings account of $25 ...or more.

On July 14, 1966 the Brevoort Savings Bank of Brooklyn would move across the street to the corner of Rockaway Parkway and Seaview Avenue.

I still have the old bank books - will post the covers. Remember the school savings bank books? The PS 272 one was from the East New York Savings Bank at Kings Highway and Rockaway Parkway (a beautiful large round building - recently demolished).

I remember when Brevoort became Metropolitan and they gave out radios and appliance timers (a new ... See Moreitem at the time) for gifts. We opened a few accounts (I don't think we had any account with more than $100) so that we could get enough timers to use for turning the lights on and off during the Sabbath. For a long time, we as kids believed that these things could only be gotten from a bank.

PS 272, one of the few vivid memories I have of that time of my life. After school, going to Engle's Barber Shop sitting in the chair listening to the men talking about it.

Merrill Schleier

Merrill Schleier Does anyone remember the Brevoort Savings Bank, next to King Arthur's Deli? When I was in public school, I won a contest in the early 1960s for my drawing of the Canarsie Indians. A $25.00 account in the bank was the prize. Cool for a little kid!

Merrill Schleier Does anyone remember being bused to PS 244 in the 1960s when 272 had only half-day classes? I had Mrs. Duhamel in 4th and 5th grade and she taught us French! We also had music and art instructions.

I remember the half day classes-the school was overcrowded. Then I think PS 115 was built to accomodate a lot of the kids from Seaview Village. Or maybe it had a different #. I don't remember being bused anywhere

Food Fair was the sponsor for one of the Canarsie Little League teams. When I was 7, they let me be the bat boy since I wasn't old enough to play yet. The uniform had an "FF" on one side of the chest. Some of the older kids said it stood for something else, not printable on a family site. LOL

Carol Hagerman There was a big hill from our apt house (1570 E. 102 St) down to the little park in front and we would have a great time skating down.
