BLACK BOND BOOKS Has anyone read Olive Kitteridge, by Elizabeth Strout? It looks good - comparisons to Anne Tyle and Sue Miller, two of my favourites - but I'm interested to hear what others think.

Patricia Cornwell has written another good one - The Scarpetta Factor, with on-going charactors and plenty of twists in the plot.

Another one I finished this week and quite enjoyed was "Paper Towns" by John Green. I've read his other two and laughed my butt off during each of them and once again he proved to do that to me again.
It's the story of a young Quentin, on the verge of graduating, but looks back at his dull life with a frown. One night,... in through his bedroom window, walks Margo Roth Spiegelman, the most popular and prettiest girl at his school, and in his opinion, the world. Taking him on a midnight adventure, Quentin comes to realize that she's not the person he thought she was. The next day, she is missing. With her disappearance taking over his life, Quentin strives to figure out what happened to her and in the process comes to understand his true potential.
Thought provoking, hilarious, and the characters are truly real. I was slightly unhappy with the ending, but it worked. I was kind of hoping for the alternative, as those who read it will understand what I mean, but it still worked out.Read More

For those who enjoyed reading "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins, I highly recommend you give "Salt" by Maurice Gee a whirl. Soon to be a trilogy, the first book is of a world that is controlled and lead by The Company, a brutal and violent government that has torn apart Hari's life and taken away his father. With t...he help of a young girl who's grown up in The Company lifestyle but wishes to flee from an arranged marriage, the two meet and join forces to bring an end to The Company's rule.
A very bleak setting but brilliantly written. Fast paced, and the characters are strong and impressive. I cannot wait for the sequel!Read More

BLACK BOND BOOKS Superfreakonomics is the new book by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner. The subtitle is "Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance" and they really do cover all those diverse topics and a few more. These authors are very good at pulling apart an interesting topic and making it both readable and enjoyable.

Just finished reading '206 Bones' by Kathy Reichs. It was just okay for me. I find, like Patricia Cornwell, she has started to let too much personal "stuff" get in the way of the story - I prefer her older books. This one starts with her bound and sealed in a tomb, apparently kidnapped. Then through flashbacks, we... find out what led her to this predicament - new bodies related to cold cases, accused of making mistakes, her work being compromised by jealous co workers and manipulative pretenders in the field of forensic anthropology. Ultimately the case is solved with the help of Ryan, of course. She uses this story to explain why all persons involved with forensics need to be totally professional and trustworthy and above all else professionaly accredited for there to be integrity in their work.Read More

I have decided that my favorite new author of 2009 is Lisa Patton. I have to admit I got this book partially based on the cover, but it was well worth it. I laughed and cried my way through her debut novel, Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'easter. It's about a woman who up roots her and her daughters’ lives and follows her hus...band to a cold Vermont inn from warm sunny Memphis. Not long after her husband's life changing purchase of the inn, Leelee Satterfield finds her life upside down. With a cast of characters you will love, hate and laugh at, this great new novel is NOT to be missed!Read More

BLACK BOND BOOKS What the Dog Saw, by Malcolm Gladwell, is a collection of essays he's written over the last decade or so. They are little, fun pieces, much like his larger books (Blink, Tipping Point, and Outliers) but bite sized instead. He specializes in explaining things from a new direction - like what does a dog see when a trainer approaches him?
