Speaker Info: " Paraquinol of 17-beta-estradiol prevents menopausal symptoms in animal models without exhibiting uterotropic or mammotropic activities"
Istvan Merchenthaler, Department of Epidemiology and Anatomy & Neurobiology, University of Maryland
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the benefits and risks of estro...gen replacement therapy
2. Learn about the beneficial actions of estrogen in preventing hot flushes and hypoxic brain injuries (focal and global ischemia) utilizing animal models
3. Learn about central nervous system (CNS)-selective estrogens
Abstract:
The perimeopause when estrogen levels are dramatically falling is associated with many, devastating symptoms, including hot flushes, mood swings (depression and anxiety), and increased risk of stroke and heart attack. Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) has been shown to lleviate most of these problems, however, it is also associated with unwanted side effects in the uterus and the breast. Therefore, there is a huge unmet need to develop novel, efficacious and safe therapies to alleviate
the symptoms of the perimenopause.
In the lecture, first you will hear about the results and the recent re-evaluation of the data of the WHI studies. Then, observations on neuroprotection with estrogen will be presented using animal model of focal ischemia (stroke) and global ischemia (heart attack). Finally, you will hear about the status of our efforts to develop a novel ERT utilizing a pro-drug approach. This pro-drug of estrogen (para-quinol of estrogen) blocks tail skin temperature rise (represents a flush) in ovariectomized rats without mulating the uterus or the breast, protects the hippocampus (part of the brain) against hypoxic injury, and blocks depression in an animal model. These reliminary data in animal models suggest that our pro-drug approach could result in the development of a novel, safe, CNS-selective ERT without any side effects in the periphery.

Doctoral Program in Gerontology - UMB & UMBC
Sigma Phi Omega (SPO), the national academic honor and professional society in gerontology, was established in 1980 to recognize the excellence of those who study gerontology/aging and the outstanding service of professionals who work with or on behalf of older persons. The formation of a society not linked directly to... any of the major professional associations appeared to be a fruitful avenue to provide a much needed link between educators, practitioners, and administrators in various settings where older persons are served.
The goals of SPO are achieved primarily through the activities of local chapters, and secondarily through efforts of the national office and officers. Local chapters serve as links within their respective communities to promote interaction between gerontology educators, students, alumni, and local professionals. The chapters provide opportunities for personal and professional interaction, sharing of concerns, discussion of issues, service activities, and so forth.
