Johns Hopkins Department of Chemistry
PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY COLLOQUIUM
Thursday, November 19, 2009
3:00 p.m.
Schafler Auditorium, Bloomberg
Refreshments 2:45 p.m. in the 3rd Floor Lounge.
It is a great pleasure to welcome science writer Eugenie Reich ( http://www.nasw.org/users/essreich/ ) as our Physics and Astronomy Colloquium speaker on Thursday Nov. 19th. ...Eugenie Reich is a freelance writer and contributor to New Scientist magazine and the Boston Globe. She has covered a wide variety of topics in science, from dark matter and geology to toxic shock syndrome and fraud in science. She has specialized in investigative reporting and written extensively on the subject of scientific fraud. Currently she is a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT.
She'll be telling us about one of the greatest scientific frauds of all time, that of "The Schon Affair". This was the basis for her book "Plastic Fantastic: How the Biggest Fraud in Physics Shook the Scientific World", which was published in May 2009. An abstract for the colloquium can be found below. The colloquium is on Thursday at 3:00pm in the Schafler Auditorium at the Bloomberg Center for Physics.
Even though this talk willbe aboout a specific case of scientific fraud in physics, it should be of interest to many other fields of science that deal with similar issues. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The Schön Affair
The Schön Affair was a series of groundbreaking fraudulent claims in the field of organic and molecular physics exposed in 2002 and originating with Jan Hendrik Schön, a staff scientist at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. In this talk, I explore Schön’s motive and modus operandi, focusing particularly on how he became involved in data fabrication as a graduate student, and how he progressed to make fraudulent claims that appeared plausible to lab managers. I also describe how his claims became magnified in scope by elements of today’s journal publication system, especially by decisions made by editors and reviewers at the journals Nature and Science.
