Thank you so much for trying to help the community, but I'm concerned that your efforts may not have the intended results. It's my understanding that MFB *charges* the local pantries (the ones who do the actual distributing to needy families) for donated food! Many pantries can't afford the charges and therefore cannot partake of the food. Ever since I found out about that, I make my donations directly to the pantry in my neighborhood and encourage my friends to do the same.

The Maryland Food Bank (MFB)is committed to distributing as much food as possible to hungry Marylanders with the goal of eventually ending hunger in Maryland. They work with nearly 900 network partners (including soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters, kids programs, and emergency feeding programs) to get food to those that need it most... Read More. MFB has two distribution centers, in Baltimore and on the Eastern Shore, that work with their partners and their volunteers to distribute food. Last year, MFB distributed 18.6 million pounds of food.

While they do charge a shared maintenance fee, it is nominal. The shared maintenance fee is on average 7 ½ cents per pound of food. This is necessary because the Maryland Food Bank works with their food sources such as grocery stores, farms, and community food drives to procure food, pick up the food, and store the food for their partners. The fact remains that they do not pass the vast majority of the costs associated with feeding hungry Marylanders onto their partners because they raise funds from the community to help deflect the operating costs.

The Maryland Food Bank can provide more than 3 pounds of food for every $1 donated and two weeks worth of lunches for just $5. They are proud of their record in service to those most in need in our communities and the strong partnerships they have throughout the state.
