Chapter two discusses verbal communication. Check out the following links to learn more about language.
The first link provides a discussion of how the word "curate" is starting to be used outside of museums and is being applied to the work of designers, club promoters, disk jockeys, and thrift store emplo...yees.

The second link provides the results of a recent Marist Poll to determine the words or phrases people find most annoying. If you don't agree with the results, all we have to say is: Whatever!

Suzann Ledford This question/topic came up in class discussion: Do you think Jung would agree that all symbols are arbitrary (in relation to archetypes)?

Steve Duck
These are really good examples of iconic signs/symbols. People seem to be perpetually inventive in finding euphemistic representatoins of ths part of human life.
We have found a really good sign/symbol match that also illustrates Taken-For-Granted elements of symbol usage: It is a picture of the intersection of Church ...St and State St. To unpick the TFG you have to know a) that Americans do not add the word "Street" when talking about intersections and b) that the separation of Church and State is a HUGE concept in the Constitution. Perhaps other fans and students (I suppose it is possible to be both!) can come up with other examples for class discussion.

Media generations are discussed in chapter nine (Technology and Everyday Life). Check out the following link for the latest data on this topic from the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

Younger generations still dominate the Internet, but the p...resence of older generations is growing. Additionally, generations appear to be using the Internet for different reasons. What does this tell us about media generations? What future changes in Internet use do you anticipate? Feel free to comment or ask questions about what you find.

Patrick Woodward Fair enough! I thought it might be "facing". I think the use of the word "acing" in this way may be common in the US, but it would not be common British usage, hence my conclusion that it was a typo. I'll have to watch out for "railroad" and missing out the "u" in "colour"!

David McMahan
We appreciate your interest in the book and are glad you are enjoying it. I looked for the typo where you mentioned, but could not find one. If you mean "acing an interview," that's no typo for "pacing an interview." This book tells you how to ace an interview!! If there is something we did not catch, though, pleas...e be sure to let us know.
If anyone has any comments about the book, we would appreciate receiving them! Thanks and enjoy The Basics of Communication!!

Patrick Woodward Ironically, I just started reading the book and came across a misprint, or typo. Its on the first line of p 2. Are there any others? Its a great book by the way!
