Be Strong, Be Gentle, Be Beautiful Just last month, we accompanied Fukuda Sensei to Tokyo. She was the honored guest of the Kodokan (original home of judo). She (and the film crew) attended the All-Japan Judo Kata Tournament, visited Fukuda's family home, visited with her college friends, paid respects to her ancestors - including grandfather Hachinos...uke Fukuda (who was judo founder, Jigoro Kano's first jujitsu teacher), took a nostalgic stroll in the Ginza - where she lived as a young child, among other things.
Steve Bunche I began my personal martial path with judo when I was eight in 1973 and moved on to study other avenues of the arts, a decision I have regretted for years. Now, having seen a brief segment of the documentary on Fukuda Sensei, my interest is re-kindled. I cannot wait to see the whole documentary and extend both my great... respect and admiration to the sensei. Her grace and focus are palpable and I wish I could have benefitted from her teachings years ago.
Be Strong, Be Gentle, Be Beautiful Then Tuesday evening there was a presentation to the judo community, the public, and the press. Fukuda Sensei spoke and illuminated Japan about her journey, her original connection to Jigoro Kano, and especially about her 43 year judo life in the United States. Eight of her students from the Bay Area were also there.... All in all it has been a very busy and wonderful visit.
Be Strong, Be Gentle, Be Beautiful Fukuda Sensei is here in Tokyo! It's been an amazing visit. On Sunday October 25th, she was the honored guest at the Kodokan Judo All-Japan Kata Tournament. It was wonderful to hear the honorific introduction during the opening ceremony. All the top people including several 10th dan Senseis were in attendance there.

This is a great moment in women's history. 40 years ago, they had halted her rank at 5th level for 30 years, because she is a woman. Today she hails as judo history's highest ranking woman, at 9th level. An...d, I with crew, will follow her to document the whole adventure!
