Fabulous trip to exotic places! Strunz & Farah did it again... this time with their long-time bass player, Eliseo Borrero, from Puerto Rico, who has performed with them since 1992! Eliseo does terrific work, great solos. Jimmy Branly did an amazing job on percussion, as always, playing the cajon as if it had a whole or...chestra hiding inside, and his solid solos took us way beyond imagination! I'd love to see him do a cajon clinic, wouldn't you? ... Because nobody does it better!
Texan Rob Hardt showed us why he belongs so perfectly in this band with his powerful musicianship and mastery of both flute and clarinet, highlighting the touch of Classical, Latin, Jazz, Gypsy-Django, Klezmer, Scheherezade, Flamenco, Folk, Caspian, Middle-Eastern magic that Strunz & Farah weave!
They got a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of the evening, and believe me, if you were there, you'd be shouting at the top of your lungs, and clapping till your arms were aching and your hands were numb! And why not.. if you had just enjoyed a magical, spellbinding, soul-stirring world tour? Or maybe it was just another night at Herb Alpert's Vibrato...

Scott Martin is exploding on the scene as a leader of his own band, The Latin Soul Band, after more than fourteen years playing with the Grammy award-winning Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band. Not many artists can boast about their Latin Jazz influences and their Soul Jazz leanings like Scott Martin can… As well as being ...featured in Poncho’s band, and in the Jazz on the Latin Side All-Stars band, Scott can be heard on such TV shows as “Sex and the City,” “The Jimmy Kimmel Show,” “As The World Turns” and many more. His recordings are among the most popular played at Vibrato between and after sets. His tight version of Willie Bobo’s very Latin-funky "Fried Neckbones and Some Home Fries" is a great mood-setter for enjoying happy hour… the new “Vibrato Hour” from 5 to 7 p.m., with all house drinks and house wines for $8! 2-time Grammy winner, Jazz pianist-arranger-composer Alan Broadbent is currently the musical director for Diana Krall, and his extensive resume includes working with Woody Herman, Diane Schuur, Chet Baker, Natalie Cole, Irene Kral, Sheila Jordan, Charlie Haden, Warne Marsh and Bud Shank, among many others. He won two... Grammies for the arrangements he did with Natalie Cole and Shirley Horn. After classical studies, then playing professionally since the age of 15, Alan finished Berklee School of Music on a scholarship. He plays with consummate taste and lyricism, and his virtuosic command of his instrument never once gets in the way of his goal, which is to produce the best music possible.

New Year's Eve at the bar... after some divine Chef's Creek Oysters topped with both orange & black Tobiko Caviar and champagne vinegar, here's the luscious Butternut Squash Gnocchi with Truffle Brown Butter, crispy Sage and drizzled Saba! The plump, toothsome pillows were sauteed, so the crust was both crispy and chew...y, with the inside meltingly tender. High-class comfort food feels so good with champagne around midnight!
In case you were wondering, Saba is a dense reduction of Trebbiano grape must (freshly-crushed grapes before they are fermented into wine) with a touch of high-quality Balsamic vinegar added. Happy New Year to you!

OMG! Another Vibrato HAPPENING! Brilliant trumpeter Arturo Sandoval showed up for dinner with his family and was invited to sit in with Wayne Bergeron's Big Band on Tuesday--and he played 4 songs, including his personal favorite, "Body and Soul." Arturo is wailing on the left, just in front of Wayne. What a treat! Art...uro just got back from a sold-out 3 nights at Yoshi's in Oakland with his own all-star band, with Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez (from NY) on drums; Giovanni Hidalgo (from FL) on congas/percussion; and Rebecca Mauleon on piano (who didn't have to fly in, being a Bay Area local). Winner of 5 Grammy Awards, 6 Billboard Awards and an Emmy Award, Arturo was a founding member of the seminal Cuban group Irakere, one of my all-time favorite groups since 1978!
Wayne Bergeron's Big Band sounded great, with the usual top-notch lineup--with a twist-- including Hearts of Music Fund founder, trombonist Bill Reichenbach, playing tuba as well as his usual trombones!
After the second set, I got to meet forward-thinking producer Gary Grant (also a trumpeter in the band), which was like meeting an old friend. Music is such a small world! We chatted music biz at the bar, while I enjoyed sipping my outrageously delicious "Limelight" Basil Martini (the first time I ever tried this)... And it hit me again, how lucky we are to have such a beautiful place in Los Angeles. Great music, perfect sound, world-class musicians, and a big, friendly family-- too good to be true? Just another night at Herb Alpert's Vibrato...

Rick Vittallo, a musical prodigy and world-class guitarist, vocalist, and entertainer, has worked with stars like Frank Sinatra and conducted for Engelbert Humperdinck. As a guitarist, arranger and conductor, Rick has led everything from a trio to a symphony orchestra. His solo performances with the London Philharmonic... are well-known internationally. This will be an exciting show for the second seating at Vibrato (9 p.m.) with full decor, a luscious dinner and champagne toast at midnight.

A child prodigy, at age 9, Dawson was playing ragtime at a Hollywood restaurant. He went off to receive an Advanced Studies Certificate in Jazz from ...USC. Chris has worked/recorded with such notable musicians as: Brian Bromberg, Larry Bunker, Frank Capp, David Foster, Charlie Haden, Joe LaBarbera, Ruth Price, the late Stacy Rowles, Jack Sheldon, Lorraine Feather, David Sills, Bob Sheppard, Tierney Sutton – to name a few.
