Geospatial Innovation Facility - UC Berkeley Title: The ecological model web and a vision for a modeling infrastructure

Dr. Gary Geller
Deputy Manager, NASA Ecological Forecasting Program
Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena CA

Abstract:

Rapid climate and socioeconomic changes may be outrunning society's ability to understand, predic...t, and respond to change effectively. Natural resource managers of all kinds want better information about what these changes will be and how it will affect the resources they are managing. The US Fish and Wildlife Service, for example, needs to understand the impacts of these changes when assessing whether to list a species as threatened or endangered, and needs to know which of a variety of possible management strategies is most effective. Nearly all of these activities require computer models. However, despite a large number of excellent models in ecology and related disciplines, there seems to be no coordinated modeling infrastructure that can be consulted to shed light on important ecological questions. While some of this shortcoming is due to the complexity of the science, lack of critical observations, and other issues, the data and model sharing that such an infrastructure can facilitate would benefit resource managers, researchers, and modelers.

The concept of a modeling infrastructure will be discussed and an approach analogous to the World Wide Web will be described for implementing it. This Model Web would be a system of interoperable computer models and databases communicating primarily via web services. It would not be planned and built--instead, like the World Wide Web, it would grow organically, without central control, within a framework of broad goals and data exchange standards. Models and datasets would be maintained and perhaps operated and served by a dynamic network of participants. While not a new idea, technology, science, observations, and models have all advanced to the point where it is now possible to start creating such a system, although it remains a long-term endeavor.

Dr. Geller is Deputy Manager of the NASA Ecological Forecasting Program. He has a M.S. in Botany from the University of Wyoming and a Ph.D. in Biology from UCLA.

Description:
This workshop introduces species distribution modeling, the process of combining species location (x,y) data with environmental data (climate, landcover, etc.) to predict where a particular species may occur. It is suitable for participants with l...ittle to no experience with species modeling, though the Intro to GIS is recommended. We will explore the theory behind species modeling, and complete some hands-on exercises to introduce the DIVA-GIS and Maxent modeling applications.

* Agenda:
* Presentation
o Overview of species distribution modeling
o Data types and sources
o Modeling algorithms
* Interactive
o Using DIVA-GIS to build a simple BIOCLIM distribution model
o Using Maxent to build a species distribution model

Description:
This workshop introduces the Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA), an advanced method used to segment a pixel based image into map objects that can then be classyfied as a whole. This type of analysis is ideal for mapping with high-resolution imager...y, where a single feature (such as a tree) may have sevreal different shades of pixels. It is suggested that participants have taken Intro to Remote Sensing I, or have comparable experience viewing and enhancing imagery in remote sensing software.

* Agenda:
* Presentation
