Here is the inspiring story of Guadalupe Magdalena Molina Vásquez, a
savvy woman--wife, scoundrel, and mother. In a society in which gender and class roles are unbending, and religion predominant, Magda climbs from the poor barrio of a Mexican town to American affluence, from wide-eyed childhood to worldly courtesan life, from full-blooded youth to oncoming blindness in middle age. With intelligence and humor, she bends the restraints of religion and culture to support her own drive for
independence and, ultimately, passes along her earthy wisdom to her
half-American daughter. A novel about love, the power of sex, and the
struggles of women, Kissing the Virgin's Mouth is an extraordinary first
novel from a major new literary talent.
About the Author:
Donna M. Gershten has previously published short stories in literary
journals. She lives in Denver, CO.

On September 17th, Lehigh had the chance to meet T.J. Leyden, a neo-Nazi white supremacist activist and recruiter who experienced a profound change of heart, turned away from hate, and began teaching tolerance.
Leyden's experience raises certain profound questions: what does repentance look like? When has a person done... a "sufficient" amount of atonement? At what point are we required to forgive a person for his or her misdeeds?
We'll be exploring these issues at a brown-bag lunch discussion on September 24th at 12 p.m. in the M Room on the second floor of the UC.
We hope you'll be able to join us.Read More

Tom "TJ" Leyden Blurb:
Program Titled: Turning away from Hate
After 15 years as a neo-Nazi white supremacist activist and recruiter, Tom "TJ" Leyden experienced a profound change of heart, turned away from hate, and began teaching tolerance.
How can a man who covered his body in Nazi symbols, advocated for the death of Je...ws, and recruited teenagers into the hate movement become one of the nation's most compelling advocates for the importance of diversity and cultural appreciation.
Well, he has turned away from the hatred that defined his life for so long. He is the one of the few known former skinheads who has left the movement and retained his own name. He worked for more than five years for the Simon Wiesenthal Center teaching on the culture of hate and the importance in fighting back against it. He was invited by President Clinton to be a featured speaker at the White House Conference on Hate, and he has trained at the Pentagon, the FBI, military bases, and for numerous law enforcement agencies. He has spoken to more than 650,000 students. He has also testified against individuals on trial for hate crimes. Leyden is committed to being a fierce advocate for the importance of appreciating the differences in all people.
In his campus program, "Turning Away from Hate," Leyden tells his remarkable story and explains his transformation. He helps students understand the harmful culture he escaped and why he is so committed to fighting it today.Read More
