Home Instead Senior Care-Quad Cities The popular campaign that last year delivered more than 4000 gifts to local needy seniors is being planned again this holiday season.

Participating Hy-Vee stores and the Rock Island Country Market along with agencies that care for and serve older adults, have partnered with Home Instead Senior Care to make sure that i...solated and needy seniors receive gifts and companionship through the Be a Santa to a Senior program.

“Be a Santa to a Senior each year on a national level sets new records in contributions of gifts to a group that often is forgotten during the hectic holiday season,” said Steve Habenicht owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving the Quad Cities. “While children are the beneficiaries of many holiday programs, people often don’t think about the isolated and lonely seniors who need to be remembered as well during this season. Be a Santa to a Senior also is designed to help stimulate human contact and social interaction for older adults who are unlikely to have guests during the holidays.”

Here’s how the program works: On October 1st the local office of Home Instead Senior Care began to accept the wish lists of seniors from local social service agencies, nursing homes, senior apartments, home care, hospice and other organizations to provide gifts to seniors who otherwise might not receive a gift this holiday season. Christmas trees, which will go up at participating Hy-Vee stores on November 13th and the Rock Island Country Market on November 27th will feature gift tags with the first names only of the seniors and their respective gift requests. Holiday shoppers can pick up a gift tag, buy items on the list. Then return them in gift bags to the store, along with the gift tag attached by December 11th. Home Instead Senior Care then enlists the volunteer help of its staff and CAREGivers, to collect and distribute the gifts to the participating agencies.

Cash donations to support the program are also needed and accepted at any THE National Bank location.

“Be a Santa to a Senior is a fulfilling way to say thanks to those older adults who have helped build our community,” Steve Habenicht said. “Our hope is that many will be touched by this holiday gesture of goodwill.”
