Big Thicket Research Take a day trip south to Big Thicket National Preserve, an environmental melting pot with southeastern swamps, eastern forests, central plains and southwest deserts. The preserve has eight trails ranging from a half-mile to 18 miles. You can fish anywhere in the preserve for flathead, bass,black crappie, bluegill and c...atfish. Hunting permits are free, but you must have a state license. Go horseback riding, hiking or biking on the Big Sandy Creek Trail, an 18-mile round trip that takes you through wild country filled with spectacular scenery. The Neches River is perfect for both short and long canoe and kayak trips.
