Recent weather and scheduling has left me very little free time to do any actual riding, but I did manage to sneak in a couple of quick rides to try and get a better first impression of what the new WTB Wolverine is all about...

What a fun ride! While it was not much more than our usual group that attended, it certainly was a good time. There were some good costumes, and I felt pretty lame with my last minute “zombie bike rider” get up. We...

Kinda like Spring Cleaning, but for bikes. I’ve been putting the finishing touches on just about all of my bikes, getting them dialed in just the way I like them, so they can sit around all winter. They need to be ready to go in case something comes up and I need to call on their services. ...

How about the mysterious “Weapon X“, just recently released by WTB? I’m talking, of course, about the WTB Wolverine 29er tire. At Interbike 2008, my rep had told me that there would be a 29er version of their successful 26″ Wolverine tire coming out soon. Sadly,...

Cycle des Spectres October 30, 2009 – Waterbury, VT Ever ride at dusk or in the night and around every turn is lurking a menacing dark shadow. A shady, mist of a figure. Chills running down your spine. A bear? A moose? Something else, totally unknown, totally spooky. ...

Well, now that “the 50″ is over, I don’t really have much on the immediate horizon. I have enjoyed my recent sloth, and will continue to do so for the next couple of weeks. The local weather authorities are crying for our first snow tonight! I so don’t care about that. This i...

I had ordered up a set of aluminum spoked I9 wheels for Kermit to bring out to Durango for SSWC, but because of the level of complexity on the colors I chose, I didn’t end up getting them in time. ...

I recently had the opportunity to check out two new bikes that are bound to be a big hit in 2010 from Gary Fisher over at Catamount. It was a great place to try out some new hardware on semi familiar terrain. First and foremost, I got some serious saddle time on the new Fisher Rumblefish...

The VT 50 was so muddy… … how muddy was it? Really F*n muddy. This is what my bike looked like before I cleaned it, but after it had spent an hour and a half in the back of an open truck bed in a rainstorm on the interstate after the “race” . I had ...

Maelstrom: Etymology: obsolete Dutch (now maalstroom), from malen to grind + strom stream. The 50 was definitely a grind and the neverending stream of mud sure did suck.

I put on a new drivetrain BEFORE the 50 in to guard against chain suck. Guess what - it didn't work.

T.Vo was tearing it up at the weekend long Verge CX Series held at Catamount this past weekend. While us “50 Lemmings” were preparing for our death march, Travis was looking fly on Saturday (when it was nice and sunny).

OK, due to extreme laziness and poor planning, I had to surreptitiously interrupt my SSWC report with my lamentations of a muddy day spent on a bike in southern VT (9h:17m to be exact – it totally blew). I am still in a southwestern state of mind. ...

Just like I-5 in the west is “The 5″, the Vermont 50 is “The 50″. It is the big race to do in these parts.Folks train all year to do this race, and because it is at the effective end of most people’s cycling season, it is the race where everyone puts it all on the line. 50 miles...

Agreed - the idea of racing went out the window at the first muddy hill. I was ready to drop out at the first aid station but decided to shoot for the station at mile 32-ish? Somewhere in between I decided to finish it no matter what. A blown sidewall almost took me out at mile 43, but I was able to patch it with bummed wrappers. At the finish an egg sized tube bubble had popped out and was rubbing the frame. Results are out on barttiming.com

Race day. Like a smart boy, I went to bed around 10:30 the night before the race, and I even managed to keep the partying well under control. I drank lots of water. I was ready. We woke, had some tasty breakfast burritos form the avant garde cafe across the street, and we got our “act” together. I...

After our muddy melee, we were offered the opportunity to go check out the “hard” part of the SSWC course. There was much bicycle cleaning going on at our place that morning. I am amazed I even had brake pads left. Th...
