Bob Sullivan With Ralph Nader last night discussing overdrafts at a DC showing of the new doc "Overdrawn." The trailer is fun viewing. The proposed overdraft law, however, faces an uncertain fate.

Trailer for "Overdrawn!", a feature-length documentary about predatory banking fees, with Ralph Nader, Joel Bakan ("The Corporation"), a loan shark, and lots of consumers who are fed up with their banks for ripping them off with overdraft fees. www.overdrawnmovie.net

I call them Dear John data letters, because of the bad news they bring and their decidedly warm and fuzzy tone."Dear Consumer.  We've lost your personal information. It's fallen off a truck/was on a laptop that was lost/was stolen by a hacker. We're sorry and we promise to ...

Bob Sullivan Company lost your data? Got one of those notifiction letters? Don't ignore it -- you are 4x more likely to be an ID theft victim. In fact, your odds are one in five that you'll be hit. Today's column has the details.

I think your stats are way out of whack (but then I guess stats can say whatever you want). Yes, a company's loosing PII data is bad, but when a meth head steals a laptop out of a parked car there is near ZERO chance that the information will be exploited. Or when a mainframe data tape is lost by UPS you have a better chance of being hit by ... Read Morelightening TWICE in one day than having your PII misused for criminal purposes.
Credit card expolits are common; true identity theft (expolitation of someone's SSN to create an alternate ID or use of that data for criminal purposes) is still very rare. So saying that if you get a letter the sky is falling is more chicken little than reliable advise of what to worry about over drinks tonight.

Kym Bob, I found a link to something that may benefit your readers. Verizon & AT&T are charging a "data charge" due to a misplacement of a button on cell phones, costing $1.99+ every time it is hit. http://video.foxnews.com/11685913/pocket-dialing

Anthony Louis DeWitt Bob: Interesting scam being perpetrated against the elderly. They call and say "this is your grandson and the police have me and I need bail money." The victim provides a credit card or bank account number and gets wiped out. Had a relative called but avoided the scam. Will send more info if you want.

Bob, your book GOTCHA CAPITALISM was really insightful! I'm amazed at how many "Gotchas" there are across the various industries. Funny - right after finishing the book (where you discuss cable companies fees always increasing monthly), a local radio ad used that concept of "Please tell me how much you will go up next ...month so I can budget ahead of time." (Philly, PA) - I laughed & thought you would, too! :) Sad that it's a hidden "gotcha"!Read More

What if there were a way to have your credit card debt erased if you lost your job or became disabled? That's the pitch behind debt cancellation, a service offered by many credit card issuers and retailers. Debt cancellation doesn’t come cheap: it costs between $1 and $2 per $100 balance.&#01...
