Andrew - Yeah I agree with you absolutely. And I believe I made that point in my second comment when I said "more power to them". Heck, I paid didn't I? But I would have taken 36 weeks instead of two, had the rates been more in line with the local economy, rather than a baseline reflecting the vacation budgets of the average middle class north American/European. My two weeks cost 60% of what I paid in monthly rent.

I seem to have created a bit of a dust up here, but not out of malice or an effort to malign the school. Really. I learned a lot, had a great time, loved the instructors and my fellow students. Maybe the school should offer a pricing structure for a different market segment - long term residents -provided we can demonstrate local residency, and commit to the longer term by paying the total in advance (or something).

Habla Ya is great for the two week tourist who incorporates Spanish lessons as part of their travel experience. Just as they would happily pay $4.00 a drink at Zanzibar instead of buying a bottle of rum at Romero and hosting a party at home, $125 for 10 hours of class is not unreasonable as part of a larger vacation budget. But I wanted to study consistently as part of a nine month stay which would have been $500/month at the $125/10 hours/week structure. That was a bit rich for the part of the market I represented. So you're right again when you say the market doesn't care insofar as we're talking about one segment of the market. Well, I suppose not all of us can rent a condo at Valle Escondido (sigh).... And I guess many people are very happy to pay $4 for nice cocktail in a nice bar for the same reason that many people are very happy to pay $10 for an Agnus Steak at a nice restaurant instead of buying the meat at the supermarkert and cooking it themselves =).

The bottom line, as stated above, is that we are able to attract and retain the best Spanish teachers in Panama with a good salary and our great work environment, and we are truly convinced that Habla Ya offers the best value for your money when it comes to learning Spanish in Panama... and it's not just something we say, many, many people agree with us:

Vana... just to be totally clear, YES, it is ONE student per family UNLESS students request to be together (for example, couples traveling together or families traveling together).
On the other hand, we have more than 30 host families, so in fact we offer MANY different Home Stay experiences... as mentioned above... the idea is that you fill out an Interview and then we match you with the PERFECT family for YOU!
