In May this year I spent 3 weeks studying at Habla Ya Language Centre in Boquete and I thought it was about time that I wrote a ‘review’ to say how much I enjoyed myself.I had previously done two Spanish language courses; one in Madrid, Spain and the other in Turrialba, Costa Rica. However, Habla Ya was by the far the ...best and I would certainly recommend it to anyone, perhaps as a really good starting point for travelling north through Central America or south through South America. The school had a really positive and energetic atmosphere about it with all the staff making me feel very welcome.Read More

I am currently studying Spanish at Newcastle University in England, and although I know that spending nearly 7 months in Central America has helped me to speak Spanish more fluently, the three weeks that I spent in Boquete were certainly the most useful as I ironed out numerous areas of uncertainty with the help of my... teacher, Monica. Along with my fellow student, Mellissa, we would talk about everything. I would complain about how expensive England was and that I didn’t like to go shopping. Monica and Mellissa would talk about how they loved to go shopping! We would play scrabble, we would work on our grammar and we would learn plenty of the Panamanian lingo (¿Qué xopá?, una racataca, una goma,) as well as about the country’s diverse culture.

Special mention should also go to María and her lovely family with whom I stayed. They always looked after me and made me feel at home.

(Part 3)

Although Boquete is quite a small town, there were plenty of activities on offer for us to participate in during our free time. Whether it was meeting up on Monday evenings for a meal cooked by Jaime (aka Jamie Oliver), watching a Hispanic / Latin American film on Wednesday evenings, dancing the night away in L...a Cabaña, the local nightclub, hiking the beautiful Sendero de los Quetzales or going White Water Rafting over the weekends, there was plenty to keep oneself occupied.

I left with many fond memories of all the things I did but most importantly of the people from all around the world whom I met. Thank you Habla Ya.

Lilly Mann

Lilly Mann Hi! A good friend spent 4 months with you guys and said nothing but AMAZING things about Habla Ya. She also mentioned the owers are great guys, but one of them fails to wash their dishes when you room with them. As dishes dont' have too much to do with spanish, I am still enticed to take some classes at Habla Ya. Carlos, can you send me a message so I can ask you some questions please!

What do we do each weekend? Simple: we GET-TOGETHER! If you were studying abroad, what would you like to do during your weekends?

Enjoy the nightlife: go out to Boquete's restaurants and bars
- Go on a hike or any type of excursion together (Boquete is Panama's ecotourism capital)
- Party at somebody's house or go to a ...festival on an open field
- Play poker
- Drink some wine
- Play some soccer or ultimate frisbee, and than have a couple of beers
- Watch a soccer game
- Go swimming to the river
- Go out dancing
- Hit the beach: we are only 1 hour from beaches in the Pacific and 3 from the Caribbean
- Give some of my time to help others and volunteer

How do we know what you would like to do? Simple: we are just like you! We love to enjoy life because we only have one life to live!

Without excellent teachers it is very difficult to learn Spanish and to really learn it fast. Whether you’re planning to study abroad or just want to travel somewhere cheap and off-the-beaten-path, Central America is a great destination. Here are five top places to visit, and things to do there. ...

Andrew - Yeah I agree with you absolutely. And I believe I made that point in my second comment when I said "more power to them". Heck, I paid didn't I? But I would have taken 36 weeks instead of two, had the rates been more in line with the local economy, rather than a baseline reflecting the vacation budgets of the average middle class north American/European. My two weeks cost 60% of what I paid in monthly rent.

I seem to have created a bit of a dust up here, but not out of malice or an effort to malign the school. Really. I learned a lot, had a great time, loved the instructors and my fellow students. Maybe the school should offer a pricing structure for a different market segment - long term residents -provided we can demonstrate local residency, and commit to the longer term by paying the total in advance (or something).

Habla Ya is great for the two week tourist who incorporates Spanish lessons as part of their travel experience. Just as they would happily pay $4.00 a drink at Zanzibar instead of buying a bottle of rum at Romero and hosting a party at home, $125 for 10 hours of class is not unreasonable as part of a larger vacation budget. But I wanted to study consistently as part of a nine month stay which would have been $500/month at the $125/10 hours/week structure. That was a bit rich for the part of the market I represented. So you're right again when you say the market doesn't care insofar as we're talking about one segment of the market. Well, I suppose not all of us can rent a condo at Valle Escondido (sigh).... ¡Hola a todos!

Eric, we're glad to hear that you had a great time with us back in 2007!

In regards to our price structure we do offer significant savings (up to 40%) for long term students. We have been doing this from the beginning...... Read More

All of our rates can be seen at:
http://www.hablayapanama.com/prices/

Rates for group lessons start at $11.25 per hour BUT they can go down to $6.75 per hour when students sign up for more than 12 weeks of Group 4 lessons:
http://www.hablayapanama.com/courses/group4.html#fees

And I guess many people are very happy to pay $4 for nice cocktail in a nice bar for the same reason that many people are very happy to pay $10 for an Agnus Steak at a nice restaurant instead of buying the meat at the supermarkert and cooking it themselves =).

The bottom line, as stated above, is that we are able to attract and retain the best Spanish teachers in Panama with a good salary and our great work environment, and we are truly convinced that Habla Ya offers the best value for your money when it comes to learning Spanish in Panama... and it's not just something we say, many, many people agree with us:

Hola Vana!
Thank you for contacting us! We can place 1-4 students per family. We choose the families according to the needs of our students, and that's why we ask them to fill out a short pre-program interview. For more information about our homestays, I would suggest you to visit the following page:

Vana... just to be totally clear, YES, it is ONE student per family UNLESS students request to be together (for example, couples traveling together or families traveling together).
On the other hand, we have more than 30 host families, so in fact we offer MANY different Home Stay experiences... as mentioned above... the idea is that you fill out an Interview and then we match you with the PERFECT family for YOU!

Do let us know if the above answers your questions. If you fell like, without any commitment, you can fill out the Interview and we'll get back to you with a COMPLETE DESCRIPTION of the host family that we would choose for you.
