Dr. Gary Woodill has identified over 50 types of learning technologies in his work at Brandon Hall Research. Some of these have been around for at least 10 years, while others are much newer. Many of the newer learning technologies are just emerging on the scene and are likely to be much more disruptive of the way that... education and training has traditionally been provided.

In this presentation, Gary will review past learning technologies, sketch his theory of innovation lifecycles and will place the various emerging learning technologies that he has identified on a lifecycle curve to show which ones are now peaking, which are maturing and even declining, and what is in the pipeline that will become available in the next five years. The purpose of the talk is to help both users and vendors to gain a perspective on the development of learning technologies, glimpse the near future of the learning industry, and make strategic investment decisions accordingly.

Even amid the adoption of informal and social learning strategies, learning management systems (LMS) continue to play an important role in employee training initiatives. These systems provide learners with access to content, and provide managers with the ability to track who knows what. In industries that require certi...fication or monitoring of training, there's no better way to ensure that individuals are qualified to do their work than by measuring their skills and knowledge using a learning management system.

Although pundits have been predicting consolidation in the learning management system market for years, the number of products available is at an all-time high. New learning management systems appear each year. How do you pick the right LMS for your organization?

Brandon Hall Research has been helping organizations make the right learning technology selection choices for more than 15 years. We've developed tools, technologies, and methodologies that make it easy to compare systems and select the one that best meets your requirements.

Spend an afternoon with two of our most experienced analysts, Gary Woodill and Tom Werner, who will guide you through the entire implementation process for acquiring and setting up an enterprise learning management system. Gary developed one of the first LMSs in 1998, and has helped with dozens of LMS implementations s...ince that date. Tom is the person in charge of our LMS Knowledgebase and keeps up to date with the latest trends and innovations in the LMS field. He will demonstrate how you can find the best LMS for your company using the Knowledgebase.

The workshop starts with some background on the purposes of a learning management system and a discussion about just what is being “managed” by an LMS. Because an enterprise LMS is a major purchasing decision, all stakeholders need to be identified, and empowered to reveal their needs and wishes in its purchase.

The work of acquiring a high quality LMS starts well before the purchase decision. It involves aligning the impetus for having an LMS with the vision and strategy of the organization, making the business case to management, and looking at handling the impact that having an LMS will have on the organization. Requirements for the LMS needed to be gathered from all significant stakeholders, and an overall strategy and budget agreed to before searching for the ideal LMS for your company.
Gary and Tom will briefly walk through all the stages in an LMS implementation, from issuing a Request for Proposal to final testing and evaluation. During the workshop, they will list issues that may arise during an LMS implementation, and discuss how these issues can be resolved. The workshop will be informative, interactive, and practical, and participants can ask questions throughout the event.

If you have the responsibility of acquiring and setting up an LMS for your company, this could be a very valuable three hours.

This session will explore how organizations can use social media tools to improve learning in the workplace. Attendees will learn:

* How social media has changed the way we communicate and collaborate
* How social media can support overall performance improvement
* Tips for building productive communities of practice

Why has classroom training taken such a hold in corporate training and development? To answer this question, we need to look at its origins and its history. The modern classroom is a learning technology that was first developed in Prussia in the 1700s, and then spread throughout the world. Sitting in rows, raising hand...s, short recesses, detentions, and other disciplinary practices all emerged over relatively short period as part of modern classroom technology. The use of classrooms for corporate training is a recent phenomenon, rising sharply after World War II. Dr. Gary Woodill, Director of Research and Analysis at Brandon Hall Research, argues that the purposes of the modern classroom include the need to immobilize the bodies of learners, have them pay attention to the instructor, and instill a self-discipline that comes from sitting still for a long period of time. He also notes that the aim of social, networked and mobile learning is to break that pattern, which is why these new learning technologies are so disruptive of classroom based instructor led training. Whether you agree with him or not, this one-hour webinar promises to be thought provoking and controversial.
