I have the lyrics to the song "Ball and Chain" by Social Distortion on my wall in my office in the Alpha building. I've always loved this song and I know every word and note of it. I wasn't allowed to have any music while I was in inpatient rehab so to keep from losing my mind sometimes I would sing it so I wouldn't miss my music. I guess I never ... Read Morereally paid attention to the words until after I got out, but its written as the lament of a career alcoholic/addict that wants nothing more than to stop and get clean. He says over and over "take away this ball and chain, I'm sick and I'm tired, and I can't take any more pain." Who knew that by singing this song several times a day for over a month, I was actually repeating a mantra that reflected my inner thoughts, feelings, and my entire life.

Namaste,
James
