Cecile

Cecile hello! I've seen this one posted today "Do not accept a friend request from a ASELA EKANAYAKE he is a hacker. Tell everyone on your list because if somebody on your list adds him u get him on your list too and he'll figure out your computer's ID and address, so copy and paste this" I can't find any references to it at your site. Do you have any info on this one?

This is the digital age's equivalent of "cooties." It's an attempt to blacklist someone by making others unwilling to "friend" them. It's an update of a hoax that hit instant messaging services in the early part of this decade.

BreakTheChain.org I'm always amazed by how much staying power some of these things come. Received a copy of the "Vanished Friend" classic today. Saddest part is one in the long chain of forwarders commented "Sorry for sending this cos I really hate them but Xmas is coming and I can’t afford to die – my son needs me to send presents to Santa." Really?!?!

'Forward or die' chain letters like this one predate e-mail by decades. In the information age, they're still popular as a replacement to real, personal contact with friends.

This notice describes a classic phishing scam, though I can find no reports that it is real or widespread. It certainly can happen. It's always a good idea to check the address bar whenever you're asked to log-in and didn't expect to be. As a general rule, try not to click links in FB e-mails. Go to your FB page directly instead.

E-mail: nothing to write home about
The Internet has certainly been a boon to the human species. It has brought the wisdom of the ages into easy reach of our fingertips. Of course, it has also brought the ignorance of the ages into our easy grasp.

When a company switches from buying domestic goods to importing the same products from overseas producers, tempers often fly. When the suspected culprit is an e-mail chain letter darling like McDonald's, the result is almost always Armchair Activism. ...

BreakTheChain.org I've been getting quite a few e-mails supposedly from Facebook telling me that my password has changed or that I have to update my user details. But I can find my new password in the attachment or click a link to re-enter my user details. This is clearly a phishing attempt. Be on the lookout for these and don't open attachments or click links to enter personal info.

Thank you for the warning! I get emails like that purporting to be from Yahoo and Paypal, too! Why can't people who have the technical know-how to pull such stunts use their skills to do something that will help people instead of scamming them :(

Never underestimate the staying power of a sick kid chain letter. This was really the first widespread 'forward for donations' hoax to go around. Not surprising it's still alive after all these years.
