90. Some see the Christian faith … [as] an old woman past her prime, closer to a nursing home than to nursing new life. But I see it differently. (ix) From A New Kind of Christianity: Ten Questions That Are Transforming the Faith (available February 9, 2010)

When hope is placed in truth, it tows us through life's trials. There is nothing a person cannot endure if their hope is placed in truth. There is a hitch on the back of truth that we can connect our hope to that pulls us through challenges and circumstances we couldn't otherwise make it through. I did not make it through the greatest trial of my ... Read Morelife because I lost hope completely because what I had been taught was truth was a lie, so my entire belief system about my Father was wrong. The religious truths I'd been taught failed me and so did the body I so loved. My belief system left me to believe God had hurt me, that he left me, that he was punishing me, that he was not in it for the long haul. That My works were not enough and would never be. My fear of his abandonment and rejection consumed me with hopelessness.
This happens because we are given mountains of theological and doctrinal points we are supposed to put our hope in. Before we know it we are going in a thousand different directions and arriving at nothing......... because God's love had been dismembered and broken down leaving no foundation to stand on. We have been lied to that nothing is free,,,, we must earn it, pay the price ,,,, With our skewed perception of God's love it is no wonder we don't know God's heart towards us. We know longer believe God is good, and God is love.......... This teaching almost destroyed me, because I believed it. Finding the truth again rediscovering the heart of God is why I can truly say I'm thankful for all I've been through because through my suffering I found Him. I once again give a huge thumbs up to the book "The Misunderstood God" "The Lies religion tells about God" Darin Hufford....... This has been so helpful to me and has given me words to explain this nightmare........

Paul Rauschenbusch gets it right in this important article on the white privilege of disassociation. All of us who looked in the mirror this morning and saw pale-colored skin should seek to understand what Paul is trying to tell us...

91. I see a new generation of Christian disciples being formed, coming alive and coming of age, disciples who hold amazing promise, even as they face huge challenges (not the least of which are misunderstanding and criticism from some of their elders)...

I just received the new German edition of Finding Our Way Again (Brunnen Verlag Gieben - www.brunnen-verlag.de) and the Chinese version of Everything Must Change (Tien Dao Publishing House, www.tiendao.org.hk). I hope these new translations will be helpful for German and Chinese readers ...

An amazing array of Christian leaders from across the denominational spectrum have convinced me of some bad news and some encouraging news. The bad news: the Christian faith in all its forms is in trouble. The good news: the Christian faith in all its forms is pregnant with new possibilities...

Pregnanacy is all about waiting. Otherwise it is a still-birth or a seriously compromised preemie. Waiting is one of the harder of the Christian virtues, but te church often changes at the speed of a Glacier's movement (which may not be a good comparison. I live in Alaska where the Glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, by yards and miles instead of inches.)

ah, we strive and look for proof of the striving in $ or in houses or in cars or in clothes. then we are surprised when all of our striving is worth no more than houses or $ or cars or clothes!

As you know, I'm "all in" when it comes to commitment to environmental stewardship. At our house, we recycle, compost, switch lightbulbs, drive a hybrid, etc., etc. But the fact that I do so much flying for my work continues to bug me...

That sounds wonderful, but genuine meaningful relationships are messy. They just are, because that is the compost that grows the Fruit of the Spirit. :/

... some religious folks burn your books ... alongside the books of "heretics" like Billy Graham and Mother Teresa, not to mention the Bible itself! You can read about it in an important short article by Lauren Winner. Sheesh.

I was stunned by the glee shown by people in the Pakistan region over this shooting spree. Several felt it was perfectly acceptable for an armed man to walk into a room and kill soldiers even though the soldiers were unarmed. I have spent a significant amount of time explaining that this dr was never going to be sent to Afghanistan to kill Muslim "... Read Morebrothers and sisters," that the harassment they believe he was subjected to was minimal, especially in comparison to the persecution minority religions face in their region, and that he was not being singled out when he was not given an opportunity to be discharged from the military.

I sense a tendency towards overreaction by Islamics in the ME region and I would strongly caution people to not feed into that reaction.

The thought that comes to mind is Paul's advice from Romans: "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good...Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good...be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil."

Even those of us who lived through the Cold War thought that mutually assured destruction was only a strategy fit for "Dr. Strangelove." It does become a bit like Pandora's box though. Once the lid is opened, it's really hard to contain. This is a question where it is really easy to agree with the principle, but really hard to implement the action on a world-wide scale. I hope and pray that we can, but I think it will be harder to achieve than health-care reform or even energy reform.

Don't worry about us Lutherans getting our knickers in a knot because we were'nt mentioned in AGO. Most of us are really quite content living in our 16th century bubble, quietly comforting ourselves with "grace, grace, grace." We're happy just the way we are...correct theology & no need to think or be part of His Kingdom. Also, we're too worried about doing 'works"... don't want to sin, now do we?

My prayers and encouragement go out to this thoughtful and agonizing partner in ministry. At various times I have felt overwhelmed and conflicted, yet often, sensitive and trusted laypersons have made the grace of God real for me and allowed me space to renew my passion. I owe the Lord and these dear friends more than they will ever know. I pray that this struggling partner in ministry will find strength and guidance in those nearby with generous hearts.
