Franklin Furnace Tumulos is the Spanish word meaning "a pile of rocks and dirt raised over a tomb." For Perez it refers to the human necessity to belong and to assert the right to each person to a place, even after death. Perez sees New York as a locus of a diverse range of ideas, peoples and lifestyles. While for years the city has sy...mbolized success and opportunity, the current economic downturn has destabilized its inhabitants literally – and symbolically. In the performance, ten people will lie flat on the ground, side to side, with a distance of approximately one meter between them. A carpet or piece of fabric will be placed over their bodies so that they are completely covered, with only their heads revealed.
Time:7:00PM Saturday, October 3rd

Gut #5: witness Walk is a performance and sculptural installation project. Diana has produced 1.5” x 1” x 1” white chocolate Humvees. During the performance, she will distribute these objects throughout the festival. In the... spirit of gift exchange, Diana and the festival goers will collectively dissolve these war vehicles by consuming them together. The performance will begin outside of the Galapagos Art Space, located at 16 Main Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201 at the corner of Water Street in DUMBO, and move through the DUMBO neighborhood. The installation at the Powerhouse Books Boiler Room Windows located at 37 Main Street will also be up during the festival.
Whether it be the chariots of Ancient Rome, the B29 bombers of WWII or the Humvees of today, each war vehicle represents the wide range of emotions invoked by conflict, including terror, liberation, oppression, protection and trauma. No matter one’s political position on particular hostilities, the act of war stirs strong sentiments and is wrenching for all. Diana writes, “As humans have historically been unable to halt warfare, we are in need of methods to heal from the effects of violence. The communal act of consumption in Gut #5: Witness Walk offers a platform to recognize the need for and instigate this healing. With the initiation of a gift economy as the individual Humvees are distributed to the festival-goers, we will use our bodies to collectively process the complex emotions conjured up by conflict and represented by these objects.”

Franklin Furnace A Show of Hands is a participatory public artwork created by artist Ed Purver. It uses site-specific video projections to explore American Sign Language and performance as mediums for examination of the privatization of public space, the architecture of free speech in the age of Homeland Security, and the presence/absence of the body in public space.

English Kills Art Gallery is proud to present Receiver, Peter Dobill's 2008-2009 Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art commissioned action-installation on Saturday May 9, 2009, starting at 6pm.
The most ambitious action-installation attempted yet by Dobill, Receiver will find the artist situated in a hermetic energy... space, immersed in a milk pool as milk simultaneously drops from the ceiling into his nose, challenging his only means of breathing.
After the performance, the installation and video of the action will remain on view until Sunday, May 17 in the gallery.
Receiver is the centerpiece of the exhibition AB UNO, presenting a comprehensive overview of Peter Dobill's practice of endurance actions. Dividing the gallery between live actions over a four-week period and a video overview of his past five years of performance work, AB UNO surveys Dobill’s explorations into the mental and physical limits of his body, focusing on energy exchange between artist and audience.

Most people know who Kim Jong-il is, the dictator of North Korea; however, women in North Korea are hidden and veiled in contemporary context. Bodies of Pyongyang is a public visual art performance installation--twenty girls wear North Korean schoolgirl uniforms situated inside a (70"x70"x70") clear cube box installati...on, located at multiple outdoor venues across Manhattan. These
tightly packed schoolgirls will try to move within the confined area expressing their emotional pain and
struggle. Red strings symbolizing their dual inner states of suppression and resistance entangle the girls,
further restricting their freedom to move inside this already constricting and hermetic space. Details follow...
