Sugar City The Rainbow Connection: Richard Hunt, Gay Muppeteer: Zine tour
Tuesday January 5, 2009
8pm $3 donation
Sugar City 19 Wadsworth St
Buffalo, NY

Author Jessica Max Stein is coming to Buffalo to support the zine “The Rainbow Connection: Richard Hunt, Gay Muppeteer” Richard Hunt was a central puppeteer on the international block...busters
Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, playing Scooter, Statler (in thebalcony), Janice, Beaker and even briefly Miss Piggy and Elmo. He was also out and proud. He died of AIDS in 1992 at the age of 40.

The 84-page chapbook is part meticulously researched biography, part celebration and analysis of Hunt’s work, and part queer reading of the Muppets. The presentation combines stories from the zine with about an hour’s worth of video clips of Hunt’s work. This is the second leg of the Rainbow Connection zine tour, which was a big hit at bookstores in Manhattan, Madison, Minneapolis, Portland OR and San Francisco.

“The Rainbow Connection: Gay Muppeteer Richard Hunt” is Jessica Max Stein’s 10th zine. Her zines “The Long Walk Back to Myself” and “Mad Love” are also available from Microcosm Publishing (http://microcosmpublishing.com/catalog/zines/2858/). She teaches English at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. Her writing has appeared in many publications including The Sun Magazine, The Indypendent and make/shift magazine.

Tough Stuff from the Buff: Experimental and Activist Video from the Fringes of Buffalo, NY
with discussion with co-curators David Gracon and Julie Perini
**Just watched the DVD and all the films are great-there is a documentary about B...uffalo Bills Fan culture, the Hotel Lenox, Tony Conrad's pets and more. We will also be making grilled cheese sandwiches.**
Tough Stuff from the Buff makes it home! The film program, brought to you by ex-pats Mark Moscato, David Gracon and Julie Perini, highlights Buffalo’s little known Do-It-Yourself (DIY) media arts community, focusing on contemporary works that blur the lines between video art, personal documentary and media activism. Representing a diverse group of artists, from accomplished media makers to youth-produced projects, the collection reflects the city’s public spaces, political struggles and its resiliency under late capitalism. Artist include: Chris Ernst, Tony Conrad, Meg Knowles, Critical Art Ensemble, Terry Cuddy, Kelly Spivey, Stephanie Gray, and more!

Sugar City Sunday Soup at CEPA Gallery: Eat Soup – Support Art – Vote on Grants!

THIS Sunday, December 13, 2009, noon to 2 pm
Market Arcade Building
617 Main Street
Buffalo, NY 14203
(716) 856-2717
With performances by Mock Syringa and maybe Russell Pascatore
$5 donation to the current Soup Grant Fund

CEPA Gallery and Sugar City are ex...cited to host the closing reception for "Repair Shop." We will share delicious soup and other accompaniments. You will generously donate to the future Sunday Soup winning artist. Then, while we eat and relax you can review the project proposals that have been submitted to CEPA over the course of the current exhibition Conversation Pieces. Sunday Soup goers will vote via ballot and select a project to receive all of the donations collected through the various soup events held at CEPA throughout the course of the exhibition. The grants are completely unrestricted and will be awarded at the discretion of the attendees at Sunday Soup.

As part of Conversation Pieces, Chicago-based collectives InCUBATE (Institute for Community Understanding Between Art and The Everyday) and Material Exchange, together with architect Adam Bobbette and CEPA Gallery have created a growing fund to support small artist initiatives or community-based projects with a focus on those projects less likely to receive funding support elsewhere. The SOUP GRANT is foremost a method of arts funding that is both transparent and participatory. It draws upon entrepreneurial and grass-roots strategies in its generation. Grant applications are posted for the public and those people who have contributed to the fund are afforded the opportunity to vote on its recipients. The program is part of “Repair Shop,” a collaborative project with local non-profit Buffalo Re-Use to build out CEPA's FLUX Gallery as an evolving and performative installation.

CEPA Gallery’s mission is to present contemporary photo-related art, to support working artists, and to promote a greater understanding of photography and its associated aesthetic and cultural issues. Conversation Pieces is an exhibition that brings together projects by artists who stage, subvert, provoke, intervene in or document public dialogues. These projects have multiple, often interrelated objectives: claiming public space, time and attention to start specific conversations around specific issues; questioning the current states, definitions, and limits of dialogue in the public realm; and presenting alternative possibilities for or re-imaginings of the public through various models of participation in (variously public) dialogues.

Sugar City holds Buffalo’s own version of Sunday Soup. Past winners includes Tom Van Deusen’s Rearing Your Tween and Madeleine Cutrona’s Urban Biopsy. Sugar City exists to organize alternative community arts and cultural events in the Buffalo area. Our goal is to share and create art based on participatory culture and a do-it-together attitude. This organization focuses itself on the exhibition, performance, and creation of art for those who cannot obtain space from traditional sources. Sugar City headquarters are at 19 Wadsworth Street in Buffalo’s Allentown neighborhood. Visit www.buffalosugarcity.org for more information.
