I think I may have found the source of “IT”. It is a passion, a desire to elevate whatever you do to art form. A few weekends ago I got to see it

Buildingsonfire Structural Collapse Prediction Technology ResearchThis USFA/National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) research partnership examined structural collapse prediction technologies on the fireground.

This project examined modern construction, the effect of weight loading, as well as thermal exposure. Development... of prediction technology for information transfer to the fire service for operational use was addressed as part of this project.NIST examined data collected by NFPA on firefighter fatalities due to structural collapse from 1979 through 2002 (not including those firefighters lost in the 2001 collapse of the World Trade Center).

The analysis included, but was not limited to, the following factors: firefighter's age, rank, experience level, and activity at the time of the incident. The types of property involved, cause and nature of death, and the time of incident were also examined.Among the trends discovered in the data was that the number of fire fighters lost annually in residential collapses has tripled since the 1980's even though there has been a decrease in the average number of annual fatalities during the same time period.

Buildingsonfire NIST Report Structural Collapse Fire Tests: Single Story,Wood Frame Structures

A series of fire tests was conducted in Phoenix, Arizona to collect data for a project examining
the feasibility of predicting structural collapse. The fire test scenario was selected as part of a
training video being prepared by the Phoenix, A...rizona Fire Department. Multiple fires were
started in each structure to facilitate collapse; the fires were not intended to test the fire
endurance of the structures. Four structures with different roof constructions were used for the
fire tests.

Buildingsonfire On any given day, at any give alarm, the dynamics around us at times may be in or out of our direct control. We may not be able to see what the cards have in store for us, BUT we must ensure we use every fragment of training, fortitude, knowledge, skills, courage, bravery, insights, luck and sometimes (other divine) in...tervention to get us through. We must have the fortitude and courage to be both safety conscious and measured in the performance of our sworn duties while maintaining the appropriate balance of risk and bravery.

· The demands and requirements of modern firefighting will continue to require the placement of personnel within situations and buildings that carry risk, uncertainty and inherent danger.
· As a result, risk management must become fluid and integrate all personnel.· We must manage dynamic risks with a balanced approach of effective assessment, analysis and probability within command decision making that results in safety conscious strategies and tactics.

We don't know what's in the cards on any given day, but the citizens we protect can rest assured, we will do our job, as firefighters to the best of our abilities, because of who we are.

The Safety, Health and Survival (SHS) Section was established in 2005 to provide a specific component within the IAFC to concentrate on policies and issues relating to the health and safety of firefighters. The IAFC has always considered health and safety to be one of the most important areas ...of concern for all fire chiefs and has initiated, or participated in, a long list of programs related to health and safety. The establishment of this section is a reflection of the importance that IAFC attaches to the responsibility of protecting our most valuable resource – our personnel.
