Cabins in the Forest began as Cape Town based acoustic duo, Gary Thomas and Andy Jamieson, which began writing and gigging together in mid 2006. Through word of mouth the band has become one of the most electrifying acoustic live shows in the country and has toured extensively. The music is eclectic, making use of 12-string guitars, didgeridoo, lapsteel guitars, effects pedals and stomp boxes. Defining their genre as Psychedelic Nu-Folk, the duo perform a wide range of musical intensities, with improvised jams on nearly every song. Cabins’ debut full band album, “Spells for Bribes”, was released in April 2008 and features 8 other musical guests from around South Africa.
Andy and Gary met 5 years ago at Gary’s brother’s 21st in Cape Town. They both played at his party to 30 people in a small Taboerskloof flat. The few times that they were in the same city at the same time, they usually had casual jams together. And when Gary moved from Durban to Cape Town in 2006, they decided to start a ‘band’ together.
Playing mostly around Cape Town and a few festivals in the area, ‘Cabins’ soon developed a very underground following through word of mouth and street and web advertising. Now, 2 years on, they have toured KZN and Gauteng several times, playing at festivals like Woodstock, Splashy Fen, Rocking the Daisies, The Grahamstown National Arts Festival, and are booked for Earthdance, Oppikoppi, White Mountain and more.
Andy and Gary decided to record a full length album in September 2007, which would include an extensive full band line up with 8 other musicians in total lending their skills to the sound. The prominent rhythm section featured Jazz masters Kesivan Naidoo (on drums) and Shane Cooper (on upright and electric bass). The album launch incorperated many of these musicans and was held in Cape Town in April 2008.
Reviews:
“Spells for Bribes is a cavernous proposal of what can be achieved by an astute musical ear and an uncanny ability to twist and redesign popular alt rock sounds. Though many of the songs are devoid of actual hooks their fine arrangement and laid back grooves, often just verging on a 1970s rock aesthetic, are both sleek and charming. For me there is a certain unaffected nostalgia to the songs. It’s difficult to pin point these gentle savages with far flung ideas, the best you can do is wallow, listen and be totally awestruck.”
Claire Angelique, Levis’ Music Mag
"The duo dovetailes nicely with Gary (a classical trained jazz musician) leading some intricate melodies on the guitar and Andy’s haunting voice adding the frills. Both members play guitar and add vocals so the usual limitations of an acoustic duo barely apply. The songs have well developed variety and the harmonization on vocals gives the music a depth that is very often lacking in bands of similar composition. This, more than anything else, firms up their position as the best exponent of acoustic rock in circulation."

Cabins in the Forest play a killer set of original and inspiring music. The whole performance is delightfully beyond expectations. The two virtuosos mov from thought provoking psychedelic harmonic play and finger tapping, into energized strumming and guitar smacking. Andy and Gary are understated and cool in their interactions with the audience, held captive by the idea of the next song... Two thumbs up for cabins in the forest, they outshine most of what Cape Town has to offer.
