I don't know that "most" people who have an interest in history believe that slavery was a major issue in the Civil War. Robert Carter of Corotoman FAme owned in excess of 3000 slaves on his plantations. He was, needless to say, very active in defending slavery. There is no question taht the media of the day, much like William Randolph Hearst incited the people into war. Lincoln's plan to solve the slave issure was to ship all slaves to the carribean or back to Afrrica.
