CHART-Communities Healing Through Art

CHART-Communities Healing Through Art In July of 2009, Cathy Moon, ATR-BC, and Angela Lyonsmith ATR-BC, LCPC, traveled to Tanzania and Kenya, in association with Global Alliance for Africa (GAA) and with support from CHART to establish therapeutic art programming for orphaned and vulnerable children. GAA is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to a...ddress, through partnerships with non-governmental and community-based organizations, the broad-based needs of children who have been orphaned and otherwise affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in East Africa.

In 2008, Cathy and Angela had served as consultants for GAA, working with children, meeting with representatives from potential partnering organizations, and participating in a cultural exchange between East African and US artists, art educators, and cultural workers. The purpose of the exchange was to create a shared undershanding of basic creative arts therapies theory and methods, and to learn about relavant cultural practices, gried and healing rituals, and the needs of vulnerable children in teh East Africa region. In 2009, Cathy and Angela returned to work in conjunction with their African counterparts, providing theraputic arts experiences for children along with "training for the trainers" in Africa who would be facilitating the ongoing theraputic arts programs.

Traveling between Tanzania and Kenya, the groups of US artists, art therapists, and social workers collaborated with African artists and cultural workers, leading art activities and meeting with local officials at GAA partner sites in Arusha, Moshi, and Bagamoyo, Tanzania as well as in Kibera, Naivasha and Nairobi, Kenya. Art workshops were offered at the Vijana (youth) center in Arusha as well as a public talk on art therapy concepts by Cathy and Angela. Cathy and Angela gave a public presentation on art therapy at the Vijana Vocational Centre in Arusha, Tanzania. Over 50 local psychologists, teachers, students, and cultural workers attended the presentation.

The GAA group offered art workshops at the first community library eatablished recently and built by GAA in Kibera, the second largest slum in Africa. After recent strife between tribal communities, the hope is that this library will serve as a neutral space and place of learning that is open and welconing to all people living in Kibera. GAA facilitated trips for the children of Kibera to the Nairobi National Game Park and to the Elephant Orphanage outside of Nairobi.

The group visited a studio program in Naivasha, lead by Sane and Eunice Wadu, that serves street children, and toured RoMoMa, Nairobi's art museaum, making connections with other artists who are interested in furthering the development of theraputic arts programs in Kenya.

In Tanzania, the group offered art experientials for local school children at the Bagamoyo College of Art, Arusha and at a Masai girl's school in Arusha, and met with staff at Loyola Counseling Center in Moshi. The trip and collaborative theraputic arts trainings were key steps toward developing sustainable therapeutice arts programming for orphaned and vulnerable children in East Africa.

Cathy and Angela will be presenting about this experience at teh upcoming American Art Therapy Association conference in Dallas, TX, the Illinois Art Therapy Association conference in Chicago, IL and the Mt. Mary spring symposium in Milwaukee, WI. They will also be provinding ongoing supervision via cyberspace to the theraputic arts trainees in Africa. Pans are underway for Summer 2010, as with the further development of the theraputic arts program and training of additional African artists and cultural workers will be as the focus.

For additional information about the trip and GAA Theraputic Arts Program, please contact Linda Stolz, Director of Programs, at lstolz@globalallianceafrica.org.

Jill Loraine Waterfield

Jill Loraine Waterfield Interested Expressive Therapists and People- I would like to invite any Expressive Therapists and people generally interested in CHARTs activities to get together in Zurich, Switzerland, and discuss ideas for getting involved in similar projects locally or remotely. This would be an informational meeting to see what's ...happening in our community and get involved. Perhaps we can form a local Swiss 'CHART' community that expands into something overseas- who knows, we'll see!

If you are interested, please email Jill at jlwaterfield@me.com and we can discuss a good time that works for everyone.

Sincerely, Jill Waterfield, ATR
