C&J Nutrition Bananas might be the first food that come to mind when you think of potassium, but potatoes actually contain more! A large banana has 487mg, while a large potato (with the skin) has 903mg. Potatoes are a starchy veggie -- so half a large potato equals a slice of bread, 1/2 cup cooked grains or pasta, etc. We love the...m topped with 4-bean chili, shredded cheese, salsa, and a dollop of low fat plain yogurt!

Yay potatoes! Thank you Incas! :) Some of the real native species contain as much protein as beans and are much more nutritionally balanced than other grocery store potatoes! For my Native American Hist. Class we did a research project on native foods to the Americas and how they changed, very interesting stuff.

We're glad to see other peeps like potatoes as much as we do...they got such a bad reputation during the low carb craze!

C&J Nutrition A new study in the British Journal of Psychiatry reported that people who ate a whole foods-based diet (versus diets higher in processed foods) reported less depression. While the study is still new (so it's wise to wait for further research before jumping to conclusions), it never hurts to choose whole foods over pro...cessed for health and weight reasons... and it just might improve your mood too!

C&J Nutrition There's a difference between satisfied, full, & stuffed -- this Turkey Day, aim to leave the table satisfied, or just barely full.... not stuffed. If you go into the meal w this goal, you're more likely to meet it. A tip -- if you plan to have a small portion of dessert, eat smaller portions at your meal, drink water w... your meal, eat slowly, & talk a lot (so you're busy talking & less likely to go after seconds.)

C&J Nutrition Despite what we often hear, people only gain about a pound over the holidays. BUT, over the years this really adds up! Head into the holidays with small, attainable goals in mind that will help you avoid this pesky extra pound. For instance, one goal we recommend is to avoid "all or nothing" thinking -- instead, think... moderation...make healthful choices most of the time, but allow yourself small treats.

If you've ever tried to cut up a butternut squash or pumpkin in order to de-seed it and peel it for baking, you know how difficult (understatement) it can be! If you haven't, don't try it without a lot of patience, a slip-free work surface, and possibly a chainsaw or axe...

C&J Nutrition Plain yogurt feeling a little...well, plain... these days? Try these combos:vanilla extract, cinnamon, walnuts, pear; almond extract, sliced almonds, cherries (fresh/frozen); Chinese 5 spice, pecans, diced apples; crystallized ginger, apricot (fresh/dried),pine nuts. Drizzle honey or sprinkle brown sugar lightly over t...he top, so you get a little taste w each bite and you'll likely use less than if you mix it in!

C&J Nutrition There's no regulation of the term "natural" on food labels -- it means little about the ingredients or nutrition facts. If you see a product labeled as "natural", it might be a winner or a loser... so check the ingredients carefully!

Companies have a lot of money behind labeling... so it pays to be an careful consumer. Sounds like you are! We've definitely all been there with grabbing a healthy-sounding product only to get it home and feel totally scammed!

Mix a can pumpkin w 1/2 cup part skim ricotta (or leave this out for a dairy-free version), 1/4 cup whole wheat bread crumbs, ginger, and black pepper. C&J Nutrition If a food is labeled a "Good source", it contains 10-19% of the Daily Value (DV) of whatever it's a good source of. Foods labeled "Excellent source" contain at least 20%. So, cottage cheese labeled "Good source of calcium" provides at least 10% of the DV for calcium (10% of 1000mg of calcium, or 100mg) per serving. Rem...ember, you still need to read the Nutrition Facts & browse the ingredients to get the full scoop.

C&J Nutrition We tend to eat more of foods when there is a wider variety of that particular food -- so stock up on an assortment of the foods you want to get more of (veggies, fruit, beans, etc.) and keep only one option around for foods that you have trouble limiting (chips, crackers, etc.) or want to eat less of (treats).
